Shoah Study

Holocaust center to educate teachers.

M fiddle school, high school
and college teachers are
invited to a week-long
seminar about the Holocaust, from
the rise of Nazism to the Holocaust
deniers of today.
The seminar will be held Aug.
16-20 at the Holocaust Memorial
Center Zekelman Family Campus in
Farmington Hills. It will feature schol-
ars and survivors.
The seminar will build up an
instructor's content base on the topic
using the latest academic scholarship
and instructional practices to make les-
sons about the Holocaust understand-
able and meaningful for students.
Participants can earn as many
as nine SB-CEUs or three graduate
credit hours through Eastern Michigan
University for an additional fee.
The seminar presenters are:
• Dr. Sidney M. Bolkosky, William E.
Stirton professor in the social sciences
and director of the honors program at
University of Michigan-Dearborn. He
is the author of the award winning A
Holocaust Curriculum: Life Unworthy
of Life and creator of the Voice/Vision
Holocaust Survivor Oral History Project.
• Dr. Eric Johnson, professor of his-
tory and director of the Center for
Transnational and Comparative History
at Central Michigan University. He is
the author of"Mat We Knew: Terror,
Mass Murder, and Everyday Life in Nazi
Germany, an Oral History and Nazi
Terror: The Gestapo, Jews, and Ordinary
Germans.

• Dr. Jack Kay, provost and vice pres-
ident of Eastern Michigan University.
He has consulted, published and pre-
sented nationally on issues of intoler-
ance, the white supremacy movement
and Holocaust denial.
• Dr. David H. Lindquist, professor
of education at Indiana University
Purdue University, Fort Wayne, and a
regional museum educator for the U.S.
Holocaust Memorial Museum.
• Dr. Roslyn Abt Schindler, professor
of literature at Wayne State University,
Detroit. She has written and presented
on the use of children's literature
and oral history to document the
Holocaust. She created and regularly
teaches an interdisciplinary seminar
on the Holocaust at WSU.
• Dr. Guy Stern. He is the Holocaust
Memorial Center director of education
and a distinguished professor emeri-
tus of German at WSU. He frequently
has consulted for the U.S. Holocaust
Memorial Museum, co-curated the
"Fighting the Fires of Hate" exhibit
and has written on the Holocaust and
the role of altruism and righteousness.
Also presenting will be members
of the museum's Holocaust survivor
network.
The tuition to attend has been
decreased to $100 because of schol-
arships made available through the
generosity of a donor. There are a lim-
ited number of openings. Deadline to
register is July 16. Contact education@

Pat graduated from Indiana University
with a degree in public affairs. He is
