THURSDAY, JULY 22 • 8:00 PM

efore conductor Stuart
Chafetz debuts this July
with the Detroit Symphony
Orchestra at the Meadow Brook
Music Festival, he has been invited
back for a second performance in
August.
Chafetz first will be joined by three
Broadway vocalists to pay tribute
to the music of the 1960s in the
concert "Oh, What a Night" at 8 p.m.
Thursday, July 22. He returns at 7:30
p.m. Sunday, Aug. 1, with well-known
cinematic themes recalled in "A Night
at the Movies!'
"These concerts will be so much
fun:' says Chafetz, 46, resident con-
ductor of the Milwaukee Symphony
Orchestra. "While this is the first
time I'll be performing this show, the
three singers have taken it around to
other venues.
"All of the tunes are hits. You can
hear one, and it takes you back to
where you were when it was popular.
When I hear, CI Heard It Through the
Grapevine, I'm thrust back into my
junior-high cafeteria!'
Other songs on the program
include a Jersey Boys medley, "La
Bamba," "It's Not Unusual,""Strangers
in the Night:' a Beatles medley,
"Respect" and "For Once in My Life."
The vocalists are Bradley Dean,
currently performing in A Little Night
Music with Catherine Zeta-Jones on
Broadway; Ron Bohmer, recently
starring in the Broadway revival of
Ragtime; and Tituss Burgess, recently
appearing in the Broadway revival of
Guys and Dolls.
"The symphony and I put together
the movie program:' Chafetz says.
"You can't have a movie-theme con-
cert without 'Tara from Gone With
the Wind. We'll also play a huge selec-
tion of scores by John Williams from
Jurassic Park, Star Wars and Far and
Away."
Chafetz recalls playing some of the
rock tunes as a drummer with high-
school bands outside of New York

City. While growing up in a Jewish
household and studying for his bar
mitzvah, his interest in the drums
grew and he took lessons at the
Manhattan School of Music.
Chafetz, who holds a degree from
the Eastman School of Music, won a
timpani position with the Honolulu
Symphony and took conducting
courses during performance breaks.
After his first professional conduct-
ing experience in a benefit concert for
Hawaii musicians, he went on to be
music director of the Maui Symphony
and Maui Pops Orchestra and a guest
conductor around the country.
Chafetz met his wife, conductor
Ann Krinitsky, in a conducting class
at the Hartford School of Music in
Connecticut. The two are relocating
outside of San Francisco, where she
will be working.
"Coming from a player's perspec-
tive, I learned the repertoire from
within the orchestra, and that helped
me to become the conduit out in
front:' says Chafetz, who hosted the
television special Hawaii: The Old
and the New for PBS.
"I feel I'll be a conduit for the
Detroit Symphony. It's been my expe-
rience that showing trust from the
podium translates into wonderful
performances!" ❑
