N

ine little girls, shy of two
years old and not out of
diapers, teetered in to
Temple Beth El's early preschool
class nearly six years ago. None of
their parents ever imagined that in
almost six years to the day, the same
pack of girls would be stuffing their
duffel bags to travel to Tamarack
Camps in Ortonville together.
Brooke Bell, Jane Borenstein,
Cammie Brown, Abby and Lily
Foltyn, Skylar Modell, Ellie Saham,
Marley Wolf and Jillian Waitzman,
all 7, attend seven different schools
in five different school districts. For
most, their weekday schedules and
their (largely non-Jewish) friends
are entirely different. However, they
spend Sunday mornings together at
Temple Beth El religious school in
Bloomfield Township.
Rabbi Daniel Syme says, "It is
our hope that the children (and
families) of our Temple remain close
from preschool through their b'nai
mitzvot and graduation from Temple
Beth El. We have many members
whose families have been friends
since the founding of our Temple in
1850."
Initially, twin sisters, Abby and
Lily Foltyn, admitted they were not
quite ready for overnight camp.

Abby said, "Maybe we can start next
year, Mommy." However, when they
learned that all their best friends
from Beth El were going to camp,
Lily insisted, "We have to go now
with our friends that will be at our
bat mitzvah!"
Somewhat differently, after years
of hearing her big sisters, Ruby and
Lacey, recite delightful Tamarack
stories, Skylar Modell was thrilled to
go. Skylar was finally old enough to
go to Tamarack — and she hoped to
lure some of her Jewish friends from
Temple Beth El to join her. It was not
so tough.
Jane Borenstein, cannot restrain
her enthusiasm. She is packed and
ready to go even though she won't
board the bus until July 6."I will
miss my dog, Cleopatra:' she says,
"but cannot wait to be with my best
friends at camp."
Along with their best friends, they
will each be bringing their newly
issued Temple Beth El teddy bears.
Each bear is sporting a hoodie has
been blessed by the rabbi and prom-
ises to be a nighttime comfort.
According to Lee Trepeck,
Tamarack Camps director, "We work
very hard at promoting these exist-
ing Jewish friendships and encour-
age new friendships as well."
