Ayalon Park

tion. Its initiatives in this area include
recycling, organic gardening and alterna-
tive building. It offers eco-workshops,
green apprenticeships and the opportu-
nity to just visit and explore the fruit of
their endeavors (www.kibbutzlotan.com ).
Another example is Kibbutz Ein Gedi,
home to one of the world's most diverse
botanic gardens. The garden boasts more
than 900 species of plants from around
the world, including some that are quite
rare. It is all the more amazing for the
fact that it is located in the midst of the
Judean Desert — a true desert oasis.
One of Israel's unique green sites is
the new Ayalon Park. Located on the out-
skirts of Tel Aviv, the park is a former gar-
bage dump that was transformed into one
of the world's largest metropolitan parks.
In addition to hiking and horseback rid-
ing trails, walking paths, gardens and the
like, the park is home to a 75-acre recy-
cling center utilizing the most innovative
recycling technologies (www.ayalon-park.
org.il/Eng).
Israel's commitment to the environ-
ment is also demonstrated in its hotel
accommodations. Israel is the largest
recycler of water in the world, with 75
percent of water reused in some way.

Hotels in Israel adhere to environmentally
responsible policies, including the use of
low-flush toilets, solar power and solar
water heaters, and comprehensive recy-
cling programs. Outside of the city, many
kibbutzim and moshavim today have
guesthouses and inns, allowing visitors to
stay close to nature and take part in the
everyday life of the community.
On Earth Day 2010, Israel's tourism
offices in North America launched a 24-
month promotion underscoring Israel's
pivotal role in the worldwide environ-
mental movement: Israel: One Hundred
Years Of Green. As part of this promotion,
a new website dedicated to "green Israel"
and eco-tourism in the country was cre-
ated: www.travelgreenisrael.com. The
website offers suggestions for places to
visit and stay to see Israel's environmen-
tal innovation firsthand.
You can also always find more informa-
tion about travel to Israel on the Israel
Ministry of Tourism's main website: www.
goisrael.com.
