Metro Lead The Way Scholarship Benefits Akiva Students Ethical Dilemmas In Combating Terrorism will be the featured presentation by Dr. David Shatz, professor of philosophy, Stern College, Yeshiva University in New York, during Akiva Hebrew Day School's second annual "Lead the Way" summer dinner party. The scholarship fundraiser is scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 24, at the Southfield home of Akiva parents Dr. and Mrs. Howard Korman. "All members of Detroit's Jewish commu- nity are invited to support Akiva and attend this summer gathering;' says event co-chair Sharona Shapiro. "This school offers a wonderful nursery through high school educational experience for families seeking a child centered learning environment" Southfield-based Akiva, Metro Detroit's only Modern Orthodox Zionist day school, has received a commitment from an anony- mous donor to match $100,000 in scholar- ship funds. Funds raised by the school through the end of August will be applied exclusively towards tuition scholarships. "We have an incredible opportunity to increase our scholarship fund and provide tuition assistance in what has unfortunately turned out to be yet another very difficult year for a signifi- cant number of our families:' said Akiva President Dr. Joseph Greenbaum. "We are blessed to have been met with such kindness again and we must meet this historic challenge. Reaching our goal last year meant we were able to furnish additional scholarships, and we maintained fiscal responsibility by not dipping into our general fund reserves to meet essential scholarship needs." This summer's party is co-chaired by Dr. Nossonal and Nancy Kleinfeldt, Dr. Martin and Sarah Kornblum, Dr. Michael and Anne Lehmann, Kimberly and Bryan Schon, Sharona Shapiro and David Lerner, and Marla and Jerold Zwas. For ticket or donation information, contact Jon Goldstein or Sidney Katz at (248) 386-1625. Akiva is a constitu- ent agency of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit. Balfour Evening Planned The Zionist Organization of America Michigan Region will hold its 77th annual Balfour Celebration in November with special recognition of the 150th birthday of Theodor Herzl, the father of modern Zionism. "Three Cantors" will perform during the event. They are Cantors Meir Finkelstein (Congregation Shaarey Zedek of Oakland County), Daniel Gross (Adat Shalom Synagogue of Farmington Hills) and Michael Smolash (Temple Israel of West Bloomfield). A dessert afterglow will conclude the evening. The program will begin at 7 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 14, at Congregation Shaarey Zedek in Southfield.
