Israel Joins Econ Group
PARIS (JTA) -- Israel's economic status
received a boost with its official entry
into the Organization for Economic
Cooperation and Development.
Following more than 16 years of
trying, Israel joined the 31 wealthiest
nations and became the first Middle
Eastern member of the OECD.
"We in Israel are deeply honored by
your invitation to join this club': Israeli
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu
said during the ceremony. "We see this
not only as recognition of what we have
achieved, but as a vote of confidence for
the future!'
Estonia and Slovenia also were wel-
comed into the group, which includes
the world's most developed countries.
New members must still go through a
detailed ratification process that can
take a few months.
Membership can mean an increase
in investment in a given country,
but it also involves coordinating and
sharing economic policies with other
members.
Israel was accepted into the group
by a unanimous vote of the 31 mem-
ber states.
Israel's GDP grew slightly in 2009,
compared to an average decline for
OECD member states. Its high per
capita exports in technology and new
legislation to curb bribery also were
among reasons Israel was invited to
join.
As an OECD member, Israel will be
held accountable to strict review of
its economic practices. In a January
report, the OECD warned Israel that
it must lower its 20 percent poverty
rate, especially high among Arabs and
ultra-Orthodox Jews.

House and NASA reportedly are stand-
ing behind the NASA administrator
for saying that his "foremost" mission
is to reach out to the Muslim world.
In a June 30 interview with Al
Jazeera, Charles Bolden said, "When I
became the NASA administrator — or
before I became the NASA administra-
tor — (President Obama) charged me
with three things. One was he wanted
me to help re-inspire children to want
to get into science and math, he want-
ed me to expand our international
relationships and third, and perhaps
foremost, he wanted me to find a way
to reach out to the Muslim world and
engage much more with dominantly
Muslim nations to help them feel good
about their historic contribution to
science!'
White House spokesman Nick
Shapiro, in a written statement to Fox
News, stood by Bolden, saying that
Obama "wants NASA to engage with
the world's best scientists and engi-
neers as we work together to push the
boundaries of exploration."
"Meeting that mandate requires
NASA to partner with countries
around the world like Russia and
Japan as well as collaboration with
Israel and with many Muslim-major-
ity countries. The space race began as
a global competition, but today it is a
global collaboration:' Shapiro said.
On Israel Nukes
WASHINGTON (JTA) -- President
Obama said he will not press Israel
when it comes to nuclear issues.
"The United States will never ask
Israel to take any steps that would
undermine its security interests:'
Obama said after meeting with Israeli
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu
last week, referring to a conversation
they had on Obama's efforts to have
more countries abide by the Nuclear
Non-Proliferation Treaty.
Israeli officials had raised concerns
after a U.S.-hosted conference in May
concluded with an agreement to con-
sider the issue of Israel. U.S. officials
later said that the issue should be
considered only subsequent to a com-
prehensive, permanent peace, which is
Israel's position.
The United States and Israel have a
longstanding agreement to maintain
ambiguity on Israel's nuclear capacity.
Israel is believed to maintain an arse-
nal of up to 200 nuclear warheads.
Answering
Israel's Critics
The Charge
Last week, Turkish President
Abdullah Gul said Israel does not
have the ability to act rationally.
The Answer
Gul's charge is based on a
misinterpretation of Israeli
democracy. Israel's multi-party
system results in having political
parties with divergent interests
causing tension within a ruling
government coalition.
