The art and science of hydroponic
WHAT BOOK, CD, OR OTHER
MEDIA DO YOU LONG TO SHARE?
gardening involves growing plants
without soil and watching flowers,
herbs and fresh vegetables thrive
indoors. Hydroharrys, a gardening and
hydroponics supply store that recently
sprouted a new location on Orchard
Lake Road in Farmington Hills, caters
to indoor and urban gardeners. The
store is an offshoot of Harry's Garden
I feel music influences our lives in ways most
people never realize. That being said, the
Clash's album London Calling had the most
impact on my life musically when, at the age
of 12, I discovered a tape my brother had left
behind on a vacation home from college. That
album really runs the gamut of musical styles. I
believe it has something for everyone.

IF YOU COULD HAVE BRUNCH
WITH ONE BIBLICAL OR
HISTORICAL JEWISH FIGURE, WHO
WOULD IT BE?
ROSENTHAL of Huntington Woods
is the company's operating officer;
his father-in-law, Jay Korelitz, owns
the business. "We believe strongly
that we've only begun to tap into the
potential of hydroponics," says Rosenthal. "Benefits include the conservation of
water, food production in hostile environments and the opportunity to create jobs for
disadvantaged segments of the population." Rosenthal, 41, who attended Eastern
Michigan University, is involved with all decisions made regarding the store and
its direction. He and his wife, Mara, also are busy nurturing their growing family.
They're raising three children, Lucie, 12; Eddie, 9; and Reggie, 3. Here, we ask Alan
Rosenthal our version of the Four Questions.

The historical figure I'd like to have brunch
with is the Chazon Ish (the Light of Torah).
The Yiddish expression of beshert, which
expresses that "something is meant to be,"
doesn't even cover this one. My father-in-law,
Jay Korelitz, is a direct descendant of Avrohom
Yeshaya Karelitz, more commonly known as
the Chazon Ish. Aside from the fact that he
was a respected scholar in all physical sciences,
the Chazon Ish, after moving from the former

Soviet Union to then-Palestine, became recog-
nized as an authority on all matters relating to
Jewish law and life. He had a strong influence
on religious life and institutions in the future
Jewish state despite the fact that he was not
head of any yeshivah; and he was an impor-
tant adviser to David Ben-Gurion. Sources
have said without the Chazon Ish's support,
Ben-Gurion would not have been able to form
Israel's first government. Now here's the "good
part": Over 60 years ago, the Chazon Ish ruled
that the science of hydroponics be used dur-
ing the sabbatical year when it is forbidden
to cultivate land in Eretz Yisrael. If that's not
beshert, I don't know what is.
