Redefining The Enemy
Editor Robert Sklar is aghast at
President Obama's failure to identify our
enemy (Editor's Letter, "Our Islamist
Enemy:' June 24, page 5) and I'm aghast
that our Jewish leaders can't see past the
enemy's front line.
The word Islamist is a euphemism for
jihadist, which is a euphemism for fun-
damentalist Muslim. Naming the enemy
is politically inconvenient, and the U.S.
National Security Strategy is a political
document created under the duress of
dependence on Muslim oil. U.S. Sen. Joe
Lieberman's issues are more semantic
than substantive.
I challenge the editor to explain how
"Islamists" have "hijacked" Islam without
quoting Mohammad incompletely or out
of context. Unobservant Muslims teach
religion to their children just as unob-
servant Jews prepare their children for
bar mitzvah. Religion for many is a habit
learned from childhood rather than a sin-
cere belief that directs their life, but tutors
and mullahs can convince the student that
scripture is God's word, not metaphor.
The Koran unambiguously com-
mands Muslims to subjugate the world
to Islam by deception, terrorism, perse-
cution and a fight to the death.
Unique among all significant reli-
gions, the militaristic political vision
and religion of Islam are one as the God
of Israel is one. The convenient lie that
Islamists made it up is believed more by
our own than it is fooling Muslims, and
such gullibility encourages the enemy
and facilitates Mohammad's strategy of
infiltrate and destroy from within.

Silence Of The Leaders
How many realize that the war in
Afghanistan ("Operation Enduring
Freedom") is now the longest war in the
history of the United States, surpassing
Vietnam's 103 months? Just because
Afghan war commander General Stanley
McChrystal was fired, the war is worsen-
ing and we still haven't found Osama
bin Laden doesn't mean that Islamist
extremism has disappeared.
Yet according to John Brennan, assis-
tant to President Obama for homeland
security and counterterrorism, Al Qaida
now can simply be labeled "violent
extremism" (Robert Sklar's Editor's Letter,
"Our Islamist Enemy:' June 24, Page 5).
Who is President Obama afraid of
offending? Palestinian Authority President
Mahmoud Abbas, whom he just promised
an additional $400 million, added to the
$900 million previous pledge to improve
conditions in the Gaza Strip and West
Bank? When Obama called the situation

in Hamas-run Gaza Strip "unsustainable"
("Obama Befuddles Israel Over P.A. Aid,"
June 24, Page 33), was he just referring to
the Israeli blockade of the port?
It is completely disheartening to hear
intense anger against Israel, but nothing
but silence from our "leaders:' following
the harrowing increase of worldwide
anti-Semitism.

Liberals Out Of Touch
Practically the entire world is turning
against Israel. Liberals like Peter Beinart
are encouraging Israel's enemies (Opinion,
"Beinart's Blast:" June 17, page 29). Israel
is facing a life-threatening situation with
the mullahs in Iran threatening Israel's
destruction. Israel is still surrounded
by enemies who, if they had the chance,
would slaughter every man, woman and
child. It would make Auschwitz look clean
by comparison.
For 2,000 years, Jews have been
exposed to expulsions, horrible humili-
ations and pogroms, culminating with
the Holocaust.
I feel that Israeli Jews, so many of
them children and grandchildren of
Holocaust survivors, are all heroes;
and Jews all over the world should treat
them as such. Instead of living in the
diaspora, where most of the Jews of
the world are still living today, the Jews
of Israel have struggled with many
thousands of deaths and many more
wounded in fighting and defending
the Jewish state.
Only Israelis can decide their foreign
policy and defense. Israeli Jews are shed-
ding their blood and giving their lives.
Any Jews that criticize Israeli policies
should move there and bleed with them.
Mainstream organizations like the
American Israel Public Affairs Committee
(AIPAC) are working tirelessly to stand
by Israel and for a strong U.S./Israel rela-
tionship. They welcome and never turn
away liberal Jews who are willing to sup-
port Israel. AIPAC has lobbied tirelessly
for Israel regardless of whether Israel's
government was left or right.
When Israel is in peril and threatened
by Iran, Hezbollah, Hamas and the
flotillas, we must solidly unite. Liberal
Jews should join the mainstream Jewish
organizations and stand by Israel. Israel
has enough enemies in the world who
wish her to disappear.
All Jews must unite and do whatever
they can do morally and financially
to make sure Israel's enemies do not
succeed and to make sure they do not
help bring tragedy upon Israel.
