Challenges Ahead
Local community leaders and
activists attended Forum sessions
and were both dismayed and ener-
gized by what they experienced.
Local SWU leaders are consid-
ering how best to bring the mes-
sage of the workshop to the larger
metro-Detroit community. "The
) cause of human rights and Israel go
together, and while our educational
efforts are very broad, we won't be
stopped from exposing anti-gay
persecution in the Middle East:'
says SWU-MI co-chair Barbara
Moretsky.
For Sheri Schiff of Birmingham,
a longtime interfaith activist, anti-
Semitism was in play.
"It may be organized under
the concept of Israeli apartheid,
boycott, divestment and sanctions
against Israel — but it is what is
has always been — anti-Semitism,"
Schiff said.
At the same time, she made it
clear that much more was going on
at the USSF. "I spoke with folks who
really do important community
work who were appalled by the far-
leftists and what they were doing to
the Forum," she said.
Community professionals like
Allan Gale, associate director of
the Jewish Community Relations
Council of Metropolitan Detroit,
says there is much work that
remains to be done.
"We need to approach churches,
campus organizations, community
organizations and community
organizers, reinforcing a message
that Jewish self-determination
— that is Israel — is rightful and
legitimate,' Gale said. "Also, the
`Zionist Left' needs to better orga-
nize and engage so that in forums
like the USSF, they can fill the
`vacuum' that is now filled by radi-
cal anti-Zionists."
Kari Alterman, director of the
American Jewish Committee's
Bloomfield Township office, also
criticized the exclusion of the SWU
workshop.
"Dissent and discussion are
important American values that
were given short shrift at the USSF,"
Alterman said. "It appears that a
small group of the organizers found
it within their power to decide what
is and isn't politically correct. As
we move forward with our work,
we need to be relentless in present-
ing balance and truth in regard to
Israel." Li
