U.S. House Backs Israel
WASHINGTON -- U.S. Rep. Gary
Peters, D-Bloomfield Township, has
assembled a bipartisan coalition of
at least 338 members of Congress
to stand up for Israel's right to self
defense.
Peters, along with Rep. Ted Poe, R-
Texas, authored a letter to President
Obama in cooperation with House
Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, Minority
Whip Eric Cantor, Foreign Affairs
Chairman Howard Berman and
Ranking Member Ileana Ros-Lehtinen
in response to the incident that
occurred last month involving a flotilla
off Israel's coast.
After the global community's rush
to condemn Israel's actions of self-
defense, Peters and Poe authored the
bipartisan letter to ask Obama to
continue defending Israel from unfair
judgments made by many in the inter-
national community in the wake of
Israel's upholding of its Gaza blockade.
"Though Israel faces constant ter-
rorist threats from Hamas, rocket
attacks from Hezbollah and a growing
nuclear threat from Iran, the world is
often silent or indifferent:' said Peters.
"Israel needs to know that its ally the
United States does and will always
stand firmly in support of Israel's right
to self-defense."
The Peters-Poe letter asks the
President to "continue to use U.S.
influence and, if necessary, veto power
to prevent any biased or one-sided
resolutions from passing" in the U.N.
Security Council.
The letter states unequivocally that
the "U.S. should make every effort to
thwart international condemnation
and focus the international commu-
nity on the crimes of the Iran-backed
Hamas leadership against Israel and
the Palestinian people'
The letter was supported by the
American Israel Public Affairs
Committee, the American Jewish
Committee, the Conference of
Presidents of Major American Jewish
Organizations and United Jewish
Communities.
Israel Travel Warning
WASHINGTON (JTA) -- The U.S.
State Department warned Americans
to "exercise a high degree of cau-
tion" while traveling in highly traf-
ficked areas in Israel. It also said that
Americans should avoid West Bank
demonstrations due to dangers posed
by Israeli troops dispersing protesters,
and should not attempt to enter Gaza
by sea.
"Israeli authorities remain con-
cerned about the continuing threat
of terrorist attacks:' said the travel
warning. "U.S. citizens are cautioned
that a greater danger may exist around
restaurants, businesses, and other
places associated with U.S. interests
and/or located near U.S. official build-
ings, such as the U.S. Embassy in Tel
Aviv and the U.S. Consulate General
in Jerusalem. U.S. citizens are also
urged to exercise a high degree of cau-
tion and to use common sense when
patronizing restaurants, nightclubs,
cafes, malls, places of worship and the-
aters, especially during peak hours."
The warning banned U.S. govern-
ment employees from using buses. It
urged vigilance for Americans visiting
Jerusalem and banned government
employees from parts of the city.
"Some U.S. citizens involved in
demonstrations in the West Bank have
sustained serious injuries in confron-
tations with Israeli settlers and the
Israel Defense Forces (IDF)," said the
statement. "The State Department rec-
ommends that U.S. citizens, for their
own safety, avoid demonstrations
Emily Henochowicz, a Jewish
American art student at Jerusalem's
Bezalel College, lost her eye recently
at such a protest when she was hit by
a tear gas canister. Witnesses say she
stood apart from rioters. Her family is
suing Israel.

Answering
Israel's Critics
The Charge
Following the Gaza flotilla incident
last month, many nations called
for an end to what they describe as
Israel's unjust blockade of Gaza.
Lois Haron Allied Member ASID 248.851.6989
The Answer
Israel's senior statesman, President
Shimon Peres, said last week that
the Gaza blockade was put in place
to protect the Jewish State from
[llamas] terrorism. He said those
who don't face terrorism as a daily
threat do not understand Israel's
needs and actions.
