oung Israel of Oak Park
hosted its seventh annual
Iron Blech cholent cook-off
on June 12, with a dozen teams of self-
proclaimed top cholent chefs compet-
ing to make the tastiest cholent.
More than 250 attendees packed
YIOP's social hall for a full lunch,
followed by a sampling of diverse
cholents ranging from Moroccan
lamb stew to Iraqi tibit to traditional
Eastern European fare.
The Iron Blech awards two top hon-
ors: the Iron Blech Apron Award, given
to the winner of the popular vote, and
the Golden Crockpot, decided by a
three-judge panel. This year's distin-
guished panel consisted of State Sen.
Gilda Jacobs, D-Huntington Woods,
Terra DeFoe, director of the city of
Detroit Mayor's Office of Faith-Based
Initiatives and YIOP benefactor Ann
Newman.
The 2010 Iron Blech Apron Award
went to the New Orleans-style
Bourbon Street Cholent made by

and Dalya Apap, 5, with help from

Secret Recipe by 10-year-old chefs
Yaakov Cohen of Oak Park and Dovid
Gelberman of Southfield.

Bourbon Street Cholent
2 large potatoes (or 3 medium), peeled
and cubed
1 large Spanish or yellow onion, very
coarsely chopped
1/3 cup barley, rinsed
1/2 bag or 1 1/4 cups mixed beans, rinsed,
but not pre-soaked
1/2 of a 15-oz. can of tomato sauce
3 tbls. onion soup mix
2 tsp. salt
2 tbls. dark molasses
1 1/2 tbls. hickory-flavored liquid smoke
1 tsp. crushed red pepper flakes
1 lb. flanken with bones
Measurements are approximate. Throw
everything into the crockpot and mix well.
Add enough water to barely cover. Cook on
high four hours before the start of Shabbat,
then turn down to low to continue cooking
until lunch.

Wertheimer. Serving a second three-year
term will be Mark Cooperman, Dr. Charles
Greenberg and Lee Turner. Serving on the
2011 Nominating Committee will be James
Deutchman, chair; Jeff Jenks, Jerry Kline
and Jamie Michelson Jr.
Rosman Memorial
On Monday, Aug. 16, at Tam-O-Shanter
Country Club in West Bloomfield,
Michigan State University's AEPi Chapter
will host the inaugural Ryan Rosman
Memorial Golf Outing in conjunction with
MSU Hillel and the Rosman family. Ryan
Rosman of West Bloomfield was killed in
an accident in Detroit.
Proceeds will support the Ryan Rosman
Leadership Fund, including a paid intern-
ship position for one AEPi member to act
as MSU Hillel/AEPi liaison.
The event includes 18 holes of golf,
lunch, beverages and a barbecue dinner.
The cost is $180 per person; dinner only
is $50. There will be closest to pin, longest
drive and straightest drive contests; spon-
sorships are available. For information,

CrossFit Bloomfield
Jordan Levin will host the grand opening
of his CrossFit Bloomfield from 11 a.m.-2
p.m. Saturday, June 26, at 2124 Franklin,
Bloomfield Hills (inside Bloomfield
Gymnastics).
CrossFit Bloomfield offers a functional
full-body training program that combines
cardio, gymnastics and weight training to
challenge and strengthen the mind and
body. Levin, a Level 1 Certified CrossFit
trainer, coaches students through a new
"cocktail" of exercises in every class for a
high-intensity workout.
Demonstrations of the CrossFit pro-
gram will be held with children at 11:15
a.m. and with adults at noon.
