Strong Teen Leaders
Thank you for your wonderful arti-
cle on Max Fisher AZA's contribu-
tion to Common Ground ("Helping
Others," June 10, page 20). As one
of the 17 chapters comprising
Michigan Region BBYO, Max Fisher
AZA!s teen leaders are excellent
examples of how Jewish teens "Stand
UP!" for causes they believe in.
It should be noted that the 1,200
Jewish teens involved with BBYO in
Metro Detroit donated more than
$8,700 to five worthy charities this
year, including Will Work for Food,
Friendship Circle, Kids Kicking
Cancer, the MS Society and Common
Ground. Of course, this is in addi-
tion to the thousands of hours of
community service our teens devot-
ed to these and other agencies in our
community this year.
I am extremely proud of our teens'
commitment to tikkun olam (repair of
the world) and BBYO's Mission (More
Jewish Teens, More Meaningful Jewish
Experiences). Yasher koach [right on!]
to each of them!

Eric Adelman, director
Michigan Region BBYO

Fighting Cancer
I wanted to thank the Jewish News
— and especially Senior Writer
Shelli Liebman Dorfman — for
the great article about our fourth
annual "Jazzalot: Music For The Soul"
("Living for Music:' May 13, page 15).
Our concert was the most successful
one we have had to date, both musical-
ly and financially. Our company, Living
for Music, Inc., and Temple Israel in
West Bloomfield co-sponsored the
concert, which benefits cancer patients
and their caregivers.
Thanks to your article that helped
get the word out to the public, we
can now work with more cancer
centers in making their patients'
journey just a little bit easier.

JVS Helps Find Jobs
We are writing in regard to the
Publisher's Notebook by Arthur
Horwitz, "Help Wanted: A Jewish
Community Czar" (June 10, page 5).
We disagree with many of your asser-
tions; however, we agree this issue is crit-
ical to our community. One out of every
five jobs in Michigan has disappeared
since 2000; and with Michigan's unem-
ployment leading the nation for the past

49 consecutive months, we are a com-
munity in crisis. It will take the active
cooperation of the entire community to
get our unemployed back to work.
JVS has taken the lead by working in
partnership with many major employ-
ers across Southeast Michigan, includ-
ing the health systems you referenced.
Contrary to your views, JVS had the
jobs for the expansion for Henry Ford
West Bloomfield Hospital posted on
ParnossahWorksDetroit.org , our on-line
search tool (which can also be accessed
by a button-click on the JVS website);
and JVS staff actively referred candi-
dates to those jobs. During the past year
alone, more than 2,700 job seekers, 500
employers and 3,000 jobs have been
registered on the site. The site works.
JVS also cultivates jobs for the
unemployed in our community, works
with synagogues and day schools
to coordinate our community's job
search activities, and works with col-
leges and training providers to facili-
tate low-cost access to training. JVS
counsels, coaches and teaches mod-
ern job-seeking skills and helps our
unemployed to reinvent themselves to
better match the developing jobs in
the new economy. JVS recently began
helping our unemployed launch entre-
preneurial ventures.
There are two critical issues that
must be addressed by the community:
the creation of new jobs and helping
people find jobs. The Jewish com-
munity is not an island unto itself.
Economic development of the region
is paramount to the entire community.
A job "czar" is not the answer. We
must all work together to help our
community get back to work.

Brian Meer, board chair
Barbara Nurenberg, president/CEO
JVS, Southfield

Thanks To Police

We were glad the West Bloomfield Police
Department was mentioned in writer
Don Cohen's excellent coverage of the
June 8 demonstration in support of Israel
"With Israel!" (June 17, page 16).
The officers on site were very profes-
sional; and it was comforting to know
they were there to ensure a safe event
for all participants.
As members of the organizing team
for the event, we want to publicly
thank them for a job well done.
