College Graduate
Heads To East Africa
With Peace Corps

Quotable

"As at previous turning points in
the life of North American Jewry
over the past century, the keys to
success in meeting challenge and
seizing hold of opportunity are
learning, leadership and vision.
"An in-depth, clear and
nuanced understanding of the
Jewish past, combined with
a firm grasp of present day
dilemmas and complexities can
equip Jewish leaders to shape a
future for Jews and Judaism that
is both vital and authentic.
"We must chart a way of
learning and living Torah in our
generation that is at once deeply
grounded in the experience
and wisdom of our ancestors
and thoroughly responsive
to contemporary needs and
sensibilities."

L

auren Fink of Bloomfield
Hills has joined the Peace
Corps.
She left on June 14 for her 27-
month assignment in Tanzania,
East Africa, where she will focus
on environmental education.
Fink is a 2006 Bloomfield Hills
Andover High School graduate
who earned her undergraduate
degree in environmental studies
from Wellesley College in Boston
this year.
"I was so lucky to be raised
in Bloomfield Hills, but I have
always felt that the privileges I
enjoy come with a deep responsi-
bility to give back," Fink said.
"I also love to travel, learn lan-
guages and immerse myself in
other cultures. It's hard to leave
knowing that there is so much
important work left to be done
here in Detroit, but the Peace
Corps is the chance of a lifetime
for me.
"Hopefully, the skills and expe-
rience I gain in the Peace Corps
will help me make a difference
closer to home."
While attending Wellesley, Fink
was an active volunteer with sev-

eral organizations, including the
Boston Area Rape Crisis Center.
She earned the Wellesley Center
for Work and Service Community
Service Award and the Marjorie
Stoneman Douglas Award for
Environmental Activism.
During her stay in Tanzania,
Fink will document her observa-
tions and experiences on her
blog, http://lauren-in-tanzania.

With experience as Board member,
borrower, donor and staff member,
Cheryl Berlin has seen Hebrew Free
Loan from almost every angle. Almost
20 years ago, she sat on the agency
Board as a YAD liaison. Later, Cheryl
and her husband came to HFL to help
send their two daughters to Camp
Tamarack. Cheryl currently assists the
agency as Loan Program Manager.
Cheryl's job, created in partner-
ship with Jewish Family Service, and
funded through the generosity of the
Jewish Fund, is the point of entry for
community members who seek
loans from HFL. "There is a real depth
to case management, a lot more than
just answering a phone and filling
out a form, because each situation is
complex and individual," Cheryl says.
"Also, we are part of Federation's No
Family Stands Alone program, so we
look really hard at the big picture,
helping applicants work with other
agencies to meet needs HFL doesn't
cover.
"You might think my job would be
overwhelming, but I work in a giving
position. Helping others enriches my
life daily."
