Central Won't Close

Detroit Central High School
is not on the Detroit Public
Schools' closing list, and DPS
"is committed to keeping
Central open," according to
DPS Communications Director
Steve Wasko.
More than 40 DPS schools,
including several high schools,
are closing following a review
by emergency financial man-
ager Robert Bobb. Not only
will Central remain open, but
it also will be part of a full
DPS campus. The site is on
Tuxedo Street near Linwood
on Detroit's west side.
Dubbed the Central
Collegiate Academy, the site
will include Durfee Elementary
School, grades K-8; Central,
grades 9-12; and a satellite
campus from "a major state
university," Wasko said, adding
that this news will be officially
announced soon.
"We have too much money
invested in Central to close
the school now," Wasko
said, adding DPS spent $54
million on Central in recent
years, building an addition
to the rear of the school and
making many technology
improvements.
