It's A Mitzvah

Volunteers blanket the community
to help others live better.

F

ederation's Women's
Department held its annual It's
a Mitzvah program on Sunday,
June 6. More than 120 volunteers
— men, women and children — came
to Congregation Shaarey Zedek in
Southfield for opening remarks and a
kosher breakfast to fortify them for a
day of volunteer work.
Participants were assigned to proj-
ects that included Kadima homes,
JARC homes, Jewish Senior Life's
Prentis Jewish Apartments in Oak Park,
Yad Ezra in Berkley, and Fleischman
Residence/Blumberg Plaza, Meer
Jewish Apartments, Danto Family
Health Care Center and Friendship
Circle, all in West Bloomfield.
Volunteers played bingo with older
adults at Fleischman, weeded and
planted flowers at Kadima and JARC
homes with the residents, made vari-
ous arts and crafts projects with older
adults, participated in Friendship
Circle's Family Fun Day and sorted cans
at Yad Ezra.
"The day was a huge success': said

event co-chair Sherrie Singer of West
Bloomfield. "I really appreciate how
many volunteers came out to spend
their Sunday morning helping others in
the community. It really demonstrates
how charitable our community is and
how lucky I am to be part of it:
Co-chair Lauren Cohen of
Huntington Woods said, "I believe
this program is truly a special one.
As Jews, we are required to help those
in need and perform acts of Tikun
Olam, repairing the world. It's a Mitvah
provides a family-friendly, interactive
opportunity to do just that — to make
a difference in the lives of people whom
Federation's agencies directly serve.
Both women stressed that the event
allows children to see and participate
in acts of mitzyot being done in the
Jewish community in hopes they will
grow up to continue their efforts to
repair the world. Associate co-chairs
of It's a Mitzvah are Leslie Berlin
of Huntington Woods and Diane
Goldstein of West Bloomfield. ❑
