Giving your Children a
Financial Education
By Rebecca Salama, CFP, CDFA
Personal finance is one frequently
overlooked area in our children's
formal education. Many parents
even shelter kids and teens from any
financial reality until it is time to
set their child financially free. It can
make a huge difference in a child's
financial future if you start to teach
your kids about money early on. From
something as simple as a counting
exercise when paying the man in the
ice cream truck to eventually earning
an allowance, the earlier you set up
a good financial foundation for your
kids to build on the more ready they
will be when it is time to manage for
themselves. Here are a few steps you
can take now with your children when
they are around age 6 or earlier, if you
think they are ready.
Allowances. This is a good way to
teach kids responsibility, independence
and money management. What you
give your child can be determined by what
they are responsible for buying, saving.
You also need to ask yourself whether
this money must be earned with helping
around the house or if it is just a given
weekly amount. Experts strongly disagree
about this topic. Saving money over time
towards things that kids want helps them
learn discipline and will help kids under-
stand the concept of cost and reward. This
is also a great talk about the importance
of giving to charity. Have your child pick
a charity they feel strongly about and set
a side a certain portion of their money to
give to this organization. Make sure to
have a set day for allowance and discuss
annually whether a raise has been earned.
Set up a bank account. Take your child to
set up a savings account at a bank and
encourage them to save into it. Set expec-
tations with your child with how much
money or their birthday money or allow-
ance should be saved. Putting money into
this formal account can provide a sense of
accomplishment and create a great habit.
Setting financial goals. Our kids are bom-
barded with things to buy and there has
been an exponential growth in the price of
these "toys." Children need your guidance
in mapping out a plan to get something
they have determined they really want.
Help them figure out how much they'll
need to save each week and for how long.
Make a written plan with them and help
them track their milestones in achieving
this goal.
If you are looking for books that will
help you teach your kids about money,
here are a few that are appropriate for dif-
ferent age groups:
Preschool: Bunny Money by Rosemary
Wells
Elementary school: Junior's Adventure (the
boxed set) by Dave Ramsey
Middle school: If You Made Millions by
David M. Schwartz
Just remember it is never too early to
start working with your kids paving a path
to a smoother financial road.
