The Loss family: Josh and Shayna Levine, Jennifer Biegelsen and Talia and
Ari Dolgin with Rabbi and Susan Loss
Dr. Lenny Hutton of West
Bloomfield was the synagogue's 17-
year-old youth group president when
Rabbi Loss came to Temple Israel.
One month after they met, Hutton's
father passed away. "He was imme-
diately there for me as my rabbi and
my mentor, with compassion I still
remember:' Hutton said. "He was a
brand-new rabbi then, but I remember
how even-keeled he stayed.
"Through the years, he's been there
for us and for so many others:' Hutton
said. "He's omnipresent, just every-
where — like Underdog.
"And he's not just physically in so
many places; he's there emotionally,
going from a place of sadness to par-
ticipating in a joyous event"
Known for his memorable eulogies,
referred to by some as "legendary;'
Loss has spoken at hundreds and
hundreds of funerals. "He excels in his
ability to make each eulogy unique
to the person he is speaking about,_
said Techner, a funeral director at the
Ira Kaufman Chapel in Southfield.
"His eulogy for my own daughter in
1978 was inspirational. In the worst
moment of my life, I have no idea
what I would have done without hav-
ing him, a man of true faith, bring us
through a very difficult time."
Finsilver noted, "Rabbi Loss is as
calming a presence in a room when a
room needs it than anyone I've ever
met"
Being There
"For Rabbi Loss to be what he wants
to be and what he's become at Temple
Israel, he needed to be with some-
one just like him, supporting that:'
Finsilver said. "And that's Susan."
"I have a wonderful partner;' Rabbi
Loss said. "To be incredibly busy and
still raise amazing children, you must
marry correctly. My kids
grew up at times with
a father who was called
away to be with families
in need in very specific
ways."
Rabbi Kaluzny says
Susan Loss shares her
husband's positive outlook
on life.
"Her commitment to
Temple Israel and the
community is just as
steadfast:' Kaluzny said.
"I love seeing the two of them walk
arm in arm around the Temple or find
them sitting and chatting before ser-
vices on Friday night. Shoshi [Susan]

With sermons that are inspirational,
entertaining and thought-provoking,
Hutton said, "Rabbi Loss really teaches
you something. You go away thinking
about what he said from all angles"
Described by some as a gifted
leader, even a visionary, David
Techner refers to Loss as
"so knowledgeable and
the absolute master in
connecting every circum-
stance to a Jewish experi-
ence."
Hutton describes Loss
as "charismatic, charming,
magnanimous, selfless, the
quintessential rabbi, with
a keen sense of humor,
who really appreciates
Rabbi Fram
everybody's individual
situation.
"And Harold and Susan together are
an amazing team:' Hutton said. "They
have taken what Rabbi Fram and
Rabbi Syme began and molded the
congregation into what it is today'
