On June 8, about 375 people gathered peacefully at the corner of Orchard Lake and Maple roads in West Bloomfield to show their support for Israel at this criti- cal time (related story: page 16). We would like to sincerely thank those individuals who helped StandWithUs- MI and the Zionist Organization of America-MI make this rally possible in just five days of planning: Yoav Raban, Federation's Israeli shaliach; Tamir Oppenheim and David Rott of Michigan Friends of the Israel Defense Forces; Andre Douville of Walk for Israel and Beverly Fine, president of the Greater Detroit Chapter of Hadassah. Many, many thanks also to those at our synagogues, day schools and community organizations who quickly sent the word out about this event. Because of every- one's efforts, more people attended than we had dared to hope would be there. For all who came, thank you so much. For all who could not make it but were there in spirit, please keep up that spirit of support for Israel. Am Yisrael Chai! The Nation of Israel Lives! The feeling of good will towards Israel was shown by the many cars that drove by, honking horns and showing the Israeli colors from their rooftops and windows. It was a proud moment of solidarity for the Jewish people. The 300- 400 people were of all ages, including an elderly pastor and his wife, who came from the Lansing area. I congratulate our local Zionist Organization of America, StandWithUs and Hadassah chapters in addition to Walk For Israel for coordinating the event along with the other sponsors and promoters of the event. Ms. Vining's description of her nursing career and her feelings about the nursing profession is pre- cisely what we try to convey when we meet with high school and community groups. I applaud her for her enthusiasm and pride in our profession. I do, however, disagree with her interpretation of Ms. Berne's article. Unfortunately, in recent years, the nurs- ing profession has been unable to recruit enough bright, talented and caring men and women like Ms. Vining. Whether this is a result of other pro- fessional opportunities opening up to would-be nurses, misperceptions by the uninformed about the nature of the nursing profession, low salaries and difficult work environments, one thing is sure — nursing today has emerged as a much-sought-after profession. Ms. Vining misconstrued my state- ment about "bed baths." One must distinguish between the reality of the nursing profession on the one hand and public perception by some on the other. As a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner, I, too, strongly believe in the importance of direct patient care and the therapeutic benefits and opportunities that these interactions provide. My statement was intended as a "myth of nursing" that needs to be corrected so that all members of the public see nurs- ing for what it is — a profession of tal- ented, dedicated members of the health care profession. I congratulate Ms. Berne for the excel- lent work she did in researching and writing this important article. She con- veyed a very important message —that we need young men and women, includ- ing those from the Jewish population, to join our profession. As Ms. Vining points out, we need to attract the best and the brightest who also have the "caring gene." I, too, am proud to be a nurse and have felt that way each day of the 35 years I have prac- ticed. Beverly B.
