apply the math (and not our com-
mon sense), by 2050, one in every
three Americans will be a member
of the Elvis Presley Impersonators
Union.
We all laughed; it seems ridiculous,
but the truth is that we apply these
same principles to other demograph-
ics and then don't understand why we
are not accurately predicting trends.
So what did I come away with,
other than a personal executive coach
for the next year?
I came away with an understand-
ing that talk is cheap. We have
tremendous talent in this city with
tremendous ideas; but we need to
stop talking and start doing. We often
believe that because something has
always been a certain way, that it
will always be that way. We fail to ask
whether or not, given our immediate
circumstances, it still makes sense.
Most important, we fail to plan for
change. Change is inevitable yet 70
percent of changes fail. Why? Because
most people plan for the change, but
do not plan for the "neutral zone." We
know what it looks like now, and we
know what we would like things to
look like when we are through; but
we do not plan for what the transi-
tion looks like. In fact, when plans
are made for transition and not just
change, 60 percent are successful.
I wish I had a crystal ball and
could predict the future of our com-
munity. The painful changes we're all
going through are widespread and
terrifying. My husband is a general
contractor. While he is staying busy
driving carpools, ferrying children,
supervising homework and helping
out with the grocery shopping, he
would much rather be busy working.
With four children, day school tuition
is quickly slipping out of our reach;
and college is looming large; we are
hanging on by our fingernails.
We continue our fight to hang on
because we love this community,
where we were both born and raised,
and where we've invested so much of
ourselves. And as I explained to one
of my counterparts from D.C., we
can't just shut down the whole state.
But we in Michigan can no longer
afford to wait for things to improve.
We must act decisively to improve
things ourselves or risk having these
decisions made for us.
