"As a Jew, I feel a connection to the
Land of Israel:' said Cobi Nadel, 12,
of Southfield, where he's a seventh-
grader at Akiva Hebrew Day School in
Southfield. "It says in the Torah that it is
our land:'
Standing with his family, Cobi paused
for the blaring honks of support from
passing cars to subside and then con-
duded,"We deserve the proper respect
that other nations receive. I feel good
being here because it shows we are unit-
ed with one thing in our hearts: Israel."
Frankel Jewish Academy students
Lizzie Belsky and Austin Friedman,
both 17 of West Bloomfield, attended
with other students and several teachers
from the West Bloomfield-based school.
"It's a crucial time and Israel needs
to know that the Michigan community
is here to support them:' said Belsky,
who is completing a course in Israel
advocacy "I'm proud to do so as an
American Jewish teenager."
Friedman also is taking the class
and doesn't think the media tell the full
story. "The media are so biased against
Israel:' he said. "Its hard to convince
people about what really happened
once they've seen things in the media"
Federation CEO Scott Kaufman
stopped by and was pleased.
"It is very impressive to see so many
people here. The Federation will con-

tinue to work actively in support of
Israel, including high-level meetings
with administration and elected offi-
cials:' he said, recalling a recent series
of meetings in Washington, D.C."We're
also working with the media through
the JCRC [Jewish Community Relations
Council] to present fair coverage'
Margo Won, new president of
Congregation Beth Ahm in West
Bloomfield, said her shul announced
the demonstration at Shabbat services.
"It is very important for Jewish
people — and other people who hold
Israel dear to their hearts — to show
their support. I'm hearing it is a very
frightening time for Israel and the Jews
worldwide. It seems as though global
attention has turned against Israel."
As the demonstration ended at 6:30
p.m., Ilene Rubin of West Bloomfield
was still waving Israeli and American
flags with her husband, Henry.
"I'm here for the love of Israel," she
said. "My heart has been bleeding. I've
been getting firsthand information
from my sister in Israel. We've seen the
distortion of the facts. It's important
to be out here and very necessary.
Wherever people are supporting Israel
is where I want to be'
