Correction: Full Thrust Of Rabbi Yedwab's Sermon

How to Send Letters

By excerpting only a small piece of Rabbi Paul Yedwab's sermon on the May
31 flotilla incident involving the Israeli navy and the Turkish-flagged ship
Mavi Marmara in international waters outside Gaza (June 10, page 10), the
IN inadvertently distorted the actual theme of the message that he delivered to
his West Bloomfield congregation at Temple Israel on Shabbat Shelach Lechah.
We apologize for the misunderstanding.
Rabbi Yedwab's June 4 points about Israel's public relations difficulties were
followed by these core thoughts, which more closely reflect the thrust of the
sermon as a whole:

"And that is how Israelis are feeling today: caught between
a rock and a hard place, or to be more exact, between a rocket
and a hard place. And perhaps that is where we come in,
because PR is important, but it only becomes determinative if
we allow it to be so. We do have to stand up for the truth here.
"There was no intention on Israel's part to harm any-
one, especially any Turkish citizen. The so-called 'innocent'
victims attacked first and viciously and they were caught
Rabbi Yedwab
on tape doing so ... if you see the video taken by the on-
board security cameras it becomes obvious; only a fool
could deny, that this was a pre-meditated provocation.
"It seems almost eerie that this unfortunate turn of events occurred in the
week of the Torah portion Shelach Lechah, which includes the story of the
12 spies sent to scout out the land of Canaan in advance of the Israelites in
the desert. Ten came back reporting that the inhabitants were like monsters,
huge and unbeatable, but two returned with reports of optimism and hope ...
"This [too] is a scary, befuddling, confusing, depressing time. But together,
even in the face of our misgivings and fears, we can become a minyan, and
support one another as together we stand with Israel in her darkest hour. We
do so by urging our congressmen and senators, our neighbors and friends
to show their support of Israel. We do so by supporting those organizations
that support Israel. We do so by not becoming discouraged and complacent
... (and we do so by making) a vow: to be like Caleb and Joshua, the two spies
who did not lose hope in the face of overwhelming odds, to stand behind our
Israeli brothers and sisters in this very difficult time; to support them and
love them and argue on their behalf and to pray for them; to be their ally
"After all, imperfect though she may be, Israel is a democratic, legally cre-
ated state, desperately pursuing peace, but besieged on all sides by intran-
sigent, violent and fanatical enemies. Let us make sure that she also knows
that she has some friends."
