R

ows of seeded dirt will soon
become fresh fruits and
vegetables for clients of Yad
Ezra thanks to a crew of volunteers
who plan to spend the summer get-
ting their hands dirty.
Eighty participants — including
religious school students, families and
Judy Kepes, Yad Ezra's vice president
— came out May 16 to break ground
for Congregation Shaarey Zedek's
(CSZ) garden.
"We expect to see the fruits — or
vegetables — of our labor sprouting
in the next month or so," said Megan
Rappaport, CSZ Jewish family educa-
tor, who created the project along with
Tobye Bello, CSZ program director.
They hope volunteers will come
from throughout the community to
help in the garden and donate funds
for supplies.
"This project is only as successful
as the volunteer base we are able to
cultivate,' Rappaport said. "Yad Ezra
(the Berkley-based kosher food pan-
try) is an organization largely based
upon volunteerism and community
efforts as is the CSZ vegetable garden.

KADIMA

Once each week — through Thursday,
Aug. 26 — we will need volunteers to
spend approximately one hour to help
weed, plant and harvest the garden:'
Among the vegetables and fruits
planted are tomatoes, carrots, lettuce,
beans, cucumbers, squash, potatoes
and onions.
"Over the course of the gardening
season, plants will come up and be
ripe for harvesting at different times,"
Rappaport said. "There should be
something new that comes up each
week:'
Yad Ezra's Development Director
Lea Luger added, "Shaarey Zedek's
membership is going green in the
best possible way. Making use of
available land and volunteers to plant
and harvest vegetables is a great idea.
Donating the harvested produce to
vulnerable families in our community
to enjoy is a win-win."
