Israel On Agenda

Some Detroit Maccabi teens
will compete in Israel in 2011.

Steve Stein
Special to the Jewish News

M

ore than 100,000 Jewish
teens ages 13-16 have
enjoyed the competition
and camaraderie of the JCC Maccabi
Games since 1982.
But none have had the opportunity
that teens will have in 2011. For the
first time in the history of the Games,
one of the venues will be Israel.
Competitions will be held at several
sites in the country.
The dates for the Israel experi-
ence are July 24 through Aug. 5, 2011.
Philadelphia, Pa., and Springfield,
Mass., also will host Maccabi Games
in 2011.
Detroit Maccabi
delegation head
Karen Gordon is
certain Detroit ath-
letes will compete
in Israel, especially
because the maxi-
mum age for par-
Karen Gordon
ticipants will be 17
instead of 16. How
many will go to Israel is another story.
"I have no idea:' Gordon said. "The
third week in August is normally our
biggest week each year because so
many kids are in camp and involved
in other activities earlier in the sum-
mer. Of course, some families may
decide to change their plans for an
opportunity to go to Israel."
This summer's Games will be held
only during the first two weeks of
August, and Detroit's numbers have
fallen. Just 91 Detroit athletes have
signed up. Gordon said Detroit's del-
egation normally ranges from 120 to
150.
Cost is another factor that may
encourage Detroit families to send
their athletes to Israel. The Israel
venue fee of $2,990 includes round-
trip airfare, meals, transportation,
security, supplemental medical insur-
ance, hotels, and organized tours of Tel
Aviv, Jerusalem and the Negev.
"That isn't much more than
the $1,500 it would cost to go to
Philadelphia;' Gordon said.
Maccabi World Union, host of the
World Maccabiah Games held every

four years in Israel, is hosting the teen
Maccabi Games in Israel and subsidiz-
ing expenses.
Maccabi Games sports to be offered
in Israel are bowling, girls volleyball,
swimming, table tennis, tennis, bas-
ketball (15-and-under and 17-and-
under boys and girls) and 7x7 soccer
(15-and-under and 17-and-under
boys and girls).
The annual Maccabi ArtsFest also
will be held in Israel in 2011. Areas
include acting/improv, broadcast jour-
nalism, culinary arts, dance, jazz, pho-
tography, rock music and visual arts.
Detroit athletes will compete this
summer from Aug. 1-6 in Denver,
Colo., and Richmond, Va., and from
Aug. 8-13 in Baltimore, Md.
Local athletes will participate in
girls volleyball, golf, track and field,
16-and-under boys basketball, 16-
and-under boys 7x7 soccer and 14-
and-under boys baseball in Denver.
Richmond will be the place for
Detroit's bowling, dance, girls basket-
ball, girls soccer, swimming, tennis,
14-and-under boys basketball and 16-
and-under boys baseball athletes.
Detroit girls softball, inline hockey
and table tennis athletes will go to
Baltimore.
