No Shoah Connection!
I was 15 years old when I was taken
Cordially invites you to attend the
Israel Bond Unity Award Tribute Dinner
to Auschwitz and my family was mur-
dered. I was shocked, dismayed and
disgusted by Gideon Aronoff's com-
mentary "Let's Overhaul Immigration"
(May 20, page 43) on the Arizona
immigration law, where he had the
audacity to compare the suffering of
the Jews of Europe, where they were
asked to show papers and to wear
yellow stars, to the new Arizona immi-
gration law.
How can the possible treatment of
the illegal immigrants in Arizona have
anything to do with the Holocaust?
Are these illegal immigrants being
sent to the gas chambers and extermi-
nation camps like the Jews of Europe?
I read his column over two or three
times because I could not under-
stand what Mr. Aronoff was trying to
say. How can any Jew in a responsible
position like Mr. Aronoff (president an
CEO of HIAS, the international migra-
tion agency of the American Jewish
community) compare the greatest
tragedy to happen to the Jewish people
in 2,000 years to the immigration
problems in Arizona?!
And is it possible for the Jewish
News, which I know is extremely sen-
sitive to these types of comparisons, to
edit out this Holocaust trivialization,
which causes so much heartbreak to
Holocaust survivors.

The event this year raised more
money then any of the last few years.
In fact, we doubled our income from
the dinner last year. In addition, we
have strong possibilities to expand
our Diverse Minds program with cor-
porate sponsors generated from this
dinner.
The elimination of the dais at this
event was not a decision made lightly.
Over the last few years, our honorees
have requested a less formal evening
— including the elimination of big
name entertainment and of the dais.

I have been the chairman of the B'nai

three years. As you know, the dinner
this year was held at the Book Cadillac
Westin Hotel. We were privileged
to honor community leaders Allan
Gilmore and David Baker Lewis.
While I appreciate your Publisher's
Notebook ("What If We Threw A
Dinner and Nobody Showed Up?",
May 7, page 5), I feel it necessary to
share with you and your readers some
things about GATA dinner that you
may not be aware of.

Nursing Spotlight
I really enjoyed your cover story
"Changing Times" (May 27, page 43).
I think writer Judith Doner Berne
nailed it; and featuring young
nurses sends such an important mes-
sage to people who might be open to
nursing as a career. Thanks for includ-
ing my part with the Detroit council
of the Hadassah National Center for
Nurses Councils.
