Penny Harvest program that teach-
es Jewish fifth-graders the meaning
of giving, and she is on the local
boards of the JCRC, the Federation
Women's Department and Jewish
Senior Life (JSL).
"I am so fortunate to live in this
community my entire life," she said.
"I've met so many people I could
ask to volunteer — some people
even try to avoid me. No one is an
activist alone; we need each other."
Citing the importance of family
in her life, she even took a moment
to talk about Adam's grassroots
endeavor — Pitch for Israel Detroit,
an upcoming baseball tournament.
The Blancks also have two daugh-
ters, Lisa and Jenna.
In a comically reflective moment,
she said she became an "instant
celebrity" when she shared half
a page ad in the IN with Mitch
Albom, and that she's changed her
mind — she would like to be nom-
inated for JEs Eight Over Eighty
award given to those in their 80s
who have made a difference in the
community.
JCRC President Richard Nodel
honed in on Blanck's key to success.
"Your leadership is outstanding
because you've set the example
with the work you've done he said.
Honorary co-chairs for the event
were Jodi and Rob Goodman of
Franklin and Betsy and Jeffrey
Heuer of West Bloomfield.
Albom set the tone for the eve-
ning with his talk about the evolu-
tion of Have a Little Faith, which
came about when his childhood
rabbi in New Jersey asked him if he
would deliver his eulogy.
In turns poignant and funny,
Albom shared what he learned
about faith over eight years of
meeting with the elderly rabbi
before his death. After delivering
the eulogy, Albom said he filially
got a peek inside the rabbi's fat
"God file" on his office bookshelf.
It was filled with pages of bibli-
cal quotes and more. What Albom
learned, he shared with the audi-
ence: "You can't fit God in a file;
you have to choose to believe that
which you can't see, that life force,
something Divine.
"Everyone, everyone is worth
helping; we're all connected:' he
said. "When you do something
good, that's faith.
"God sings and we all hum along','
he said. "There are different harmo-
nies, but one human song."
