WHILE YOU'RE THERE

Time to spare in Sandusky?
Check out these attractions:
Most Metro Detroiters
have visited Cedar Point
at some time in their lives.
North America's second-old-
est amusement park opened
in 1870 as a public bathing
beach and the park's first
roller coaster was built in 1892,
standing 25 feet tall and reach-
ing a speed of 10 miles per
hour. Constantly expanding
ever since, with 75 rides and
coasters, waterparks, children's
areas, a challenge park, para-
sailing, lodging and more, it's
been rated the "No. 1 amuse-
ment park on the planet" by
Amusement Today, and it's still
working hard to keep that title.
Case in point: A brand-new
ride, Shoot the Rapids (shown),
has debuted this season. The
park's third water ride and the
most expensive water ride ever
built at Cedar Point, the 2,100-
foot-long adventure allows
guests to navigate the waters
aboard a 10-passenger boat
through a wooded area while
encountering surprise water
elements, two lift hills and
special effects, ending with a
dramatic "shoot" through water
rapids and rockwork. Go to
cedarpoint.com for more infor-
mation and to plan a visit.
With all the area has to offer,
it's easy to miss lesser-known
destinations. But those who've
been to the African Safari
Wildlife Park in Port Clinton,
Ohio (20 minutes west of Cedar
Point), come back again and
again. Visitors are offered up-
close and personal access to
giraffes, zebras, camels, alpac-
as and lots of other critters with
drive-through and walk-through
park areas. After you've doled
out your free cup of animal
food to the residents, be sure to
check out the pig races, pony
rides and animal shows. For
details, visit africansafariwild-
lifepark.com .
