SCOOP
Oprah described the gelato created by Palazzolo's Artisan
Gelato & Sorbetto as "creamy, delicate, fresh and heaven
on a hot Fourth of July." It's hard to top that, but we call
it "yum." The maker of the European-style ice cream has
been a Saugatuck destination since 1986, when the shop
was opened as Palazzolo's Italian Specialties by Marie
Palazzolo and her son, Pete (the daughter and grand-
son, respectively, of Chef Peter Larco, owner of Larco's
Inn in Detroit). The frozen treats became so in demand,
Palazzolo's began to wholesale to area restaurants. Now
with more than 600 custom-crafted flavors (many of which
are certified kosher), including White Chocolate Raspberry
Gelato (shown), Triple Dark Chocolate Gelato and Mango
Sorbetto, stocked in groceries and counters across the
country, Palazzolo's priority is still natural ingredients,
flavored with fresh-fruit purees and imported chocolates
(there are no artificial-growth hormones in the farming of
their milk) and happy customers. Stop in for a scoop at the
just-opened-in-May Lik Gelato Bar, in the Coffee District
of Great Lakes Crossing in Auburn Hills (likgelatobar.
corn) or pick up a pint from the freezer section at Holiday
Market in Royal Oak (248-541-1414). For more info on

MOVIE MADNESS
Skip the local megaplex and head instead to a piece of
living history — and a truly fun experience. The Redford
Theatre, in continuous operation since it opened as
"America's Most Unique Suburban Playhouse" in 1928,
has been restored through donations over the years and
is chock-full of enticing artifacts. It's also one of the few
places film buffs can see some of their classic favorites
on the big screen, ranging from silents to the musicals
of the '40s-'60s, and films from the '90s. Family-friendly
showings of The Sound of Music and Meet Me in St.
Louis appear alongside The Great Escape, The Karate Kid
and The African Queen, while twice yearly Three Stooges
Festivals are constant crowd-pleasers. Currently owned
by the nonprofit Motor City Theatre Organ Society
(which means audiences are treated to a performance on
the theater's original pipe organ before each show), the Redford is operated by a team
of devoted volunteers. Next up: Mel Brooks' The Producers (shown) with Gene Wilder
and Zero Mostel (June 11-12); Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey (June 25-26);
and Alfred Hitchcock's Rear Window (July 9-10). For more information and a com-
plete schedule, visit redfordtheatre.com .
