already snaking around the corner of
Jake's Nightclub. Guys in jackets and
girls decidedly lacking them wait anx-
iously to be let into the club so they can
get close to the stage. By 11 p.m., almost
1,000 people are inside, standing in a
large pit-area in front of the stage, with
crowded bars flanking both sides.
The excitement is palpable; and
when Posner takes the stage, the crowd
erupts. The girls scream as the beat
drops for his first song. Waving his
hands up and down in rhythm with
the thumping bass, Posner instructs his
fans to do the same.
Posner's Michigan friends are taken
aback by the speed at which his fan
base has grown.
"Everyone I know loves Mike's
music:' says Lindsey Shaw of
Bloomfield Hills. "I still can't believe
how popular he has become'
Another high-school friend, George
Roberts of Birmingham, agrees. "It's
pretty amazing to see how quickly it's
happened," he says. "At the same time,
we've watched him work hard for so
long. We saw flashes at times, and then
it all came togethet"
Roberts was in New York City with
Posner two summers ago and went
with him to try to meet rappers and
producers who would listen to the beats
Posner had created for other artists.
They went to a well-known club in the
city, and Posner was ecstatic when he
got a famous rapper's e-mail address.
By the next summer, Posner was
headlining that same club to a sold-out
crowd.
"As time went on, and as I wrote
more hooks, eventually I had these
songs that wouldn't work for anybody
else,' says Posner. "Someone else could
sing all the notes for my songs, but I
can't picture any artists in the industry
singing those lyrics:'

Making The Music
Posner makes all his music via instru-
ments interacting with complicated
music software. Scattered about his
dorm room were electronic keyboards,
drum kits, a guitar, a high-fidelity
microphone and, of course, computers.
His songs are a mixture of hip-hop
and pop that often relies on a catchy
electronic-sounding beat. His distinc-
tive, slightly raspy voice has been
compared to Daniel Merriweather and
Macy Gray and is readily recognizable
by the college faithful.
A fan-favorite track, "Speed of
Sound," is Posner's musical reflection
on his rapidly accelerating music career
— and subsequently frenzied life, and

yet another bass-heavy pop track that is
danceable yet conveys the introspective
theme that runs throughout all of his
work.
He sings, "Every time I blink now,
another day rolls by / It's getting harder
not to think / about all the things on
my mind." This track is off his most
recent mixtape, One Foot Out the Door,
which further propelled Posner's music
to nationwide, campus-heavy stardom.
he is eager to make the transi-
tion to mainstream audiences.
He seems to be doing just that. Not
only are Posner's songs getting radio air-
time, just last week the video for his now
Top-40 single "Cooler Than Me" pre-
miered on MTV and he landed his first
musical guest spot on TV, taping a show
for Lopez Tonight that aired May 31.
Scores of music publications have
praised his music for its originality and
catchiness.
In the May 28 issue of Entertainment
Weekly, for example, Posner appeared
on the magazine's pithy pop culture-
savvy "Bullseye" page, which had this
to say: "On Mike Posner's single 'Cooler
Than Me, he sings, `If I could write you
a song to make you fall in love: He just
did."
Posner hopes he soon will become a
household name.
"I am confident that I will achieve my
goals, and I hope to impact pop culture
in a significant way:' he says.
These days, Posner is focused on
writing and producing his major-label
debut scheduled for release later this
year — "Every song is incredible. If it's
not, then it's not making the album',' he
recently told the L.A. Times.
In addition, he'll be touring the coun-
try for two months this summer as a
performer on the popular Vans Warped
Tour, where he'll perform for hometown
fans on July 30.

Now,

Nathan Greenberg and David Weisman
