SHIRLEY D'VORA MALAMUD, 80, died early May 10, 2010, an hour after Mother's Day. The daughter of Charles and Esther Bertman, she was Malamud born in Brooklyn, N.Y., in 1930. Attending public school in the Bronx, she "fell in love with Hebrew:' sparking a lifelong connection to Labor Zionism and the Kibbutz movement. In 1947, she won a $100 prize as New York City's best Hebrew student. In 1948, she went from one subway car to another collecting so much money for the new State of Israel that the JNF awarded her a dunum of land. Soon after, she made aliyah with her former husband, Jerry Malamud, as part of Ichud Habonim Garin Bet, pioneering Kibbutz Urim. She returned to Detroit in 1954 and raised her family, earning a master's degree in social work at Wayne State University. In the late 1980s, she lived briefly in Atlanta, Guadalajara and Sinai before following her children to San Diego. Although she struggled from an early age with several serious medical issues, she had a brilliant mind, led a colorful life and touched many hearts. She took her last breath surrounded by family. Mrs. Malamud is survived by her son, Mild( (Micha) Malamud of San Diego; daughters, Yael Kosta of San Diego, Donna Malamud of Los Angeles and Tamara (Tammy) La Toto of Denver; grandchildren, Nathan Kosta and Ariella Laichas-Malamud; niece, Renee Bertman; nephews, Steve and Mark Bertman.
