We marched in reaction to the senseless violence associated with guns in the United States and the disbelief that the guns used at Columbine were purchased at a gun show with no background check on the buyer. In the 10 years that have elapsed since that Mother's Day in 2000, an estimated 872,247 people have been killed or injured with guns in the United States. The laws enacted by cities and states to assist law enforce- ment have been weakened because of the persistent lobbying and campaign financing of the gun lobby led by the National Rifle Association. It's time for those who recognize the need for sensible gun laws to step up and help prevent another tragedy. Call your representative and ask- ing him/her to co-sponsor H.R. 2324, legislation to close the gun show loophole. Diane Margolis-Baum West Bloomfield Scouting Memories I was pleased to read your article "Scouting Centennial" (Feb. 11, page 71). As a youngster in Vancouver, British Columbia, I was a Cub Scout and have many fond memories of those years and our activities. Some years later, I when I came to Detroit and lived around the corner from the Dexter-Davison market, actually, immediately south of the Jewish Community Center on Davison, I began working part time at the JCC working my way through Wayne University. One of my original assignments was to work with Cub Scout Pack 369. I had enjoyed that position and opportunity for a number of years, working not only with the Cub Scouts, but also with the parents as well. Since that time, I have had only come in contact with one of those Cub Scouts, who now happens to be very active in the Jewish community. We still practice the traditional salute, but I don't think we have the same socks and garters. We can't recall any others we may have known in our younger years, but would be very interested in meeting up with them again. If any participants in Pack 369 are still around, both of us would appreci- ate hearing from you (gelfond@msn. com). Allan Gelfond Farmington Hills The Real Narrative Rabbi David M. Gordis insists that genuine negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians can only take place if Israel offers to give up part of Jerusalem ("Don't Write Off Liberals:' May 13, page 36). He also maintains that there should be a "two-state solu- tion that respects the differing narra- tives of two peoples." Rabbi Gordis' focus on "differing narratives" ignores the long and all too real history of Arab intransigence and violence against Israel and Jews in order to place all responsibility for peace on Israel. The Palestinian "narrative" is based on a one-state solution and the illegitimacy of Israel as a nation. The blood of thousands of Israelis murdered in the name of Islamic terrorism and anti-Jewish blood lust is not a narrative. It is his- tory that we ignore at our and Israel's peril. Is it any wonder that those of us who seek peace in the Middle East doubt that J Street is pro-Israel when J Street members adopt Palestinian talking points as their position on Israel? The only way to accept their arguments is either to ignore the history of the Middle East or to sup- port the Palestinian "narrative" at the expense of Israel. That is not a complex reality. That is accepting reality. Harry Onickel Ferndale Birmingham: 850 S.
