L

eonard Zimmerman, who grew
up in Huntington Woods and
pursued an advertising career in
New York City, wasn't looking for a sec-
ond career when it recently found him.
Old friends soon can see it played
out in a big way by watching Sex and
the City 2, which comes to local movie
theaters May 27 starring Sarah Jessica
Parker and the gang from the TV series.
Zimmerman portrays the uncle of a
groom in a unique wedding. Although
he does not have a speaking part,
Zimmerman appears prominently
watching the ceremony, sitting at a fam-
ily table and dancing enthusiastically.
"I spent six long days of shooting','
says Zimmerman, 60ish and single,
whose acting interests launched in 2008
at the suggestion of a friend in the enter-
tainment business. "Making that film
was exciting and fun, and I was fasci-
nated by the extent of professionalism in
how this production was put together."
Zimmerman, advised to try out for
background work in movies and TV dur-
ing the writers strike, believes he won
jobs because he looks like a typical New
York professional. Since working on an
auto show presentation, he has been cast
as a lawyer in the CBS series The Good
Wife, a rabbi in the USA series Law &
Order Criminal Intent and an awards
patron on the FX series Damages.
"I believe my roles are reflective of
me as a person:' says the emerging
actor, who enjoys the cultural environ-
ment of New York and skiing getaways
in Vermont. "Casting has to do with the
way I'm seen:'
Zimmerman, who hadn't thought
about acting since appearing in plays
at Dondero High School in Royal Oak,
early on had his sights set on an adver-
tising career. He earned his bachelor's
degree at Ferris State University, where
he majored in advertising and mirrored
in economics, and his master's degree
at the University of Illinois, where he
focused on journalism communications.
While working as an account man-
ager for Young & Rubicam in 1970,
Zimmerman was transferred to New
York. He went on to open his own
marketing consulting firm, which he
maintains.

- Leonard Zimmerman

"I approach roles by using my market-
ing skills',' says Zimmerman, currently
seen in a New York commercial for a
Jewish funeral home. "I belong to the
Screen Actors Guild and the American
Federation of Television and Radio
Artists and get called to auditions
through those organizations."
Zimmerman was cast as a sommelier
in the film Julie & Julia. Although part
of his scene was cut, audiences still
can recognize him if they look quickly.
Zimmerman will get a longer view as he
portrays a Gekko contemporary in Wall
Street 2.
"I feel very close to Michigan, and
I'm watching with interest as the film
industry continues to grow there,' says
Zimmerman, a former member of Adat
Shalom Synagogue in Detroit who grew
up participating in AZA activities.
"I believe the film industry has
broadened my opportunities in life,
and my goal is to expand my presence
in film and TV. I've begun taking act-
ing classes, and I will work because I
love to work." 7
