Development Cooperation
WASHINGTON (JTA) -- Israel and
the Organization of American States
signed a memorandum of under-
standing consolidating decades of
development cooperation.
The agreement signed on May 17
at OAS headquarters in Washington
pledges to advance existing collabora-
tion on education, environment, eco-
nomic and social development, pov-
erty, gender equity, disaster prevention
and relief, agriculture, security and
combating terrorism, and crisis man-
agement, according to a news release.
Israel has operated in the OAS
sphere since at least 1972, when it
was granted permanent observer
status, and offers a number of fellow-
ships and training programs for Latin
Americans.
"We attach great importance to
this special agreement, which reflects
Israel's vision of sharing responsibil-
ity with the nations of the world in
confronting the global challenges that
we face said Israeli U.S. Ambassador
Michael Oren, who signed the memo-

Palestinian Boycott Begins
JERUSALEM (JTA) -- The Palestinian
Authority has launched a boycott
against products manufactured in
West Bank Jewish settlements.
The official boycott against 500
specific products began on May 18.
A list of products that the Palestinian
Authority has ordered to be boycotted
will be sent to West Bank Palestinian
homes in the coming weeks, according
to reports.
Any Palestinian merchant caught
dealing in the banned products faces
fines and jail time.
"This is an act of hostility with
all intents and purposes on the part
of the Palestinian Authority and its
leaders, and it must be answered
immediately and decisively just like
any other act of hospitality," the Yesha
Council settlers organization said in a
statement. "This is a clear violation of
the Paris Protocol which regulates the
economic relations between Israel and
the Palestinian Authority. Israel must
use the Palestinian Authority's funds
in its possession to compensate the
boycotted factories."
randum with Jose Miguel Insulza, the
OAS secretary-general.
Israel especially wants to expand
cooperation in combating terrorist
financing, seen as a growing problem
because of the increased influence in
parts of Latin America of Hezbollah
and Iran.
Joint Intern Program
WASHINGTON (JTA) -- A Jewish and
a Palestinian-American group are run-
ning a joint intern program.
Under the program, Americans
for Peace Now will host a Palestinian
this summer and the American Task
Force for Palestine will host an Israeli
student.
"This initiative is a profound expres-
sion of the solid common ground that
Jewish Americans and Arab Americans
share in our joint struggle to promote
Middle East peace," APN President
Debra DeLee said in a joint release
Monday with the American Task Force
for Palestine. Both groups advocate for
a two-state solution.
The program is run under the
auspices of New Story Leadership, a
Washington-based group that brings
together Israelis and Palestinians
younger than 30 to learn more about
the other's narrative.
The interns will work with other
interns already hosted by the two
groups.
Answering
Israel's Critics
The Charge
Iranian journalist Akbar Ganji last
week criticized the U.S. admin-
istration's "one-sided" support of
Israel and its "double standard"
of ignoring Israel's stockpile of
nuclear weapons.
The Answer
Although Ganji is a human rights
advocate, he embraces a "blame-
Israel" view. He should know that
the U.S. is an honest broker in
Mideast peace negotiations, and
that Israel's nuclear capability, if
it exists, is a deterrent established
after many attacks by its Arab
neighbors.
