What A WINGO!
A
record number of attendees —
374
packed Congregation
Beth Ahm in West Bloomfield
on April 28 for the 18th annual WINGO
event produced by ORT America
Michigan Region.
What started as a small women's
chapter bingo event grew into what is
now a fundraiser that ORT America
Michigan Region has depended upon to
raise close to $30,000 every year.
This year, WINGO exceeded past
years, raising $41,720.50. The funding
will go toward programming all over the
world; one-third will go to the David B.
Hermelin ORT Resource Center in the
West Bloomfield JCC. This year, partici-
pants also donated three bins of school
—
supplies for students at the Hermelin
ORT Resource Center in the JCC.
"These numbers are very promis-
ing in a tough economy," says Nicole
Muchnick, ORT America Michigan
Region director. "We are so fortunate
to have a dedicated team of volunteers
who can expertly plan a fantastic, fun
event that raises significant funds for
the causes and programs that ORT has
focused on for 130 years:'
Event co-chairs include Julie Hirsch,
Robbie Sherman, Paula Lynn and Sylvia
Wolf. Hirsch has served on the WINGO
committee for more than a decade and
has been involved with ORT for 15 years.

Downtown Shul Vision
T
he board of the Isaac Agree
Downtown Synagogue in
Detroit has adopted a vision
and mission statement, reports President
Marty Herman and members Judy
Wineman and Sharon Luckerman.
• Vision: The Downtown Synagogue
envisions itself as a broadly inclusive
institution: one in which anyone may
discover Judaism in a safe and welcom-
ing environment. It offers a place in
which all can openly observe and reflect
upon their role as Jews — both his-
torically and in contemporary society
— and provides a hub for collective
action in support of the Jewish commu-
nity as well as the general community
of greater Detroit.
• Mission: The principal mission of
the Downtown Synagogue is to serve
as a beacon for the Jewish community
of Metropolitan Detroit by maintain-
ing a traditional, egalitarian synagogue
in Detroit; by acting as a conduit for
Jewish activity in the city; by offering
a wide range of programming that will
support the revitalization of the city;
and by ensuring accessibility to all. ❑

"Young diaspora Jews' identities are being formed
less by negative factors such as anti-Semitism
and hatred and more by positive factors such as
education, upbringing and religion."

of BIU Today ("Surveying The Global Picture Of Jewish Education").
