WSU's Jacob from page 45

Spousal Support

Max Jacob paid the then-kingly
sum of $20,000 to have the house
constructed in 1915, according
to university records. Martin B.
Burkheiser designed the 8,000-
square-foot, two-story, yellow brick
Italianate villa.
Jacob and his family lived in the
house until 1924, after which it was
bought by John J. Ryan. The univer-
sity acquired the property in 1944
during the first wave of expansion
that has become today's large, urban
campus.
It served as office and classroom
space until the university trans-
formed it into the president's resi-
dence with a 1999 renovation that
brought it back to 1915 style. Much
of the $1.7 million cost of renovation
was raised through private philan-
thropy.
Generations of the Jacob family
have walked by its gracious facade.
Bruce Jacob's mother, Irene Ruth
Cohen Jacob, earned a bachelor's
degree in education at Wayne in the
early 1940s.
Max Jacob's granddaughter, Elaine
Jacob, earned a bachelor's degree in
industrial design in 1942 and later
funded a visiting artist fund in her
name and a gallery housed in WSU's
Old Main.
Elaine Jacob, 89, is living in north-
ern California and is expected to
make the trek to campus this fall for
the big company anniversary party.
"The extended family is now large
and spread all over the country —
hundreds of people will be coming
for the celebration',' says Bruce Jacob,
who serves on the six-member board
of M. Jacob & Sons.
So, what's more exciting: celebrat-
ing the two new graduates who are
heading into the world or the fact
that the family business is celebrat-
ing its 125th anniversary? "I think
125 years in business beats my col-
lege graduation',' Gregory Jacob says,
laughing.
Gregory plans to work in market-
ing at the business founded by Max
Jacob, which was the first company
to recycle bottles and the first to use
plastic for bottles.
"I will be the fifth generation
of the family working there — it's
pretty amazing, especially to have the
business doing so well. The rest of
the industry is down and we're up','
Gregory Jacob says. I—
