Steve Stein Special to the Jewish News S panning the globe to bring you the constant variety of Jewish sports: Hail To The Chief Robert Spivak of Philadelphia, chairman of Maccabi USA/ Sports for Israel, made history this month when he was named president of the Robert Spivak 19th World Mac- cabiah Games. He's the first non-Israeli to be president of what's known throughout the world as the "Jewish Olympics." The 19th Maccabiah Games will be held in July 2013. The two-week com- petition held every four years in Israel is the largest Jewish sports gathering and the third largest sports event in the world. It is sanctioned by the Inter- national Olympic Committee and the World Federation of Sports. Maccabi USA sponsors the U.S. teams that participate in the Maccabiah Games, Pan American Maccabi Games, and Maccabi competitions in Europe and Australia. It also is a co-founder of the JCC Maccabi Games for teens. Back To Back? Birmingham Marian High School girls soccer coach Barry Brodsky guided the Mustangs to back-to-back state champi- onships in 2003 and 2004. He hopes to repeat the feat this spring. Sixteen players are back from last year's Marian team, which won the Division 2 state title. Brodsky, in his ninth year as coach, said this year's team has plenty of individual talent, but must develop the mental toughness needed to fight its way through the state tournament. After losing to DeWitt and tying Rochester in its season-opening games, Marian won seven straight. - - Hot On Ice With 11 goals in 13 games, Montreal Canadiens forward Mike Cammalleri was the leading scorer in the National Hockey League playoffs Mike Cammalleri heading into the Canadiens' Game 7 showdown last week with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Cammalleri was born in Richmond Hill, Ont. He played for the University of Michigan from 1999-2002. Berlin Wall Barry Berlin is the assistant coach of the Royal Oak High School softball team that recently won its first tournament. Royal Oak was formed in 2006 when Dondero and Kimball high schools merged. The Ravens beat Hazel Park 5-2 in the championship game of a tourna- ment established in honor of longtime Royal Oak Daily Tribune sports writer Jim Evans. Ready For The Fight Undefeated Israeli boxer Yuri Foreman, an aspiring rabbi who is the World Boxing Association super welter- weight cham- pion, will put Yuri Foreman his perfect record and the title on the line June 5 against challenger Miguel Cotto in the first boxing card held at the new Yankee Stadium. Foreman, 29, who lives in Brooklyn, N.Y., is 28-0 with eight knockouts. Cotto, 29, a Puerto Rican, is 34-2 with 27 knockouts.
