Alice Frank, art-
ist, will have a solo
art show at the
Lawrence Street
Gallery during June.
There will be an
opening wine and
cheese reception,
Frank
Friday, June 4,
from 5-9 p.m. The gallery is at 22620
Woodward Avenue in Ferndale.
Frank, who created the Zachor at
the Holocaust Memorial Center in
Farmington Hills, will exhibit works
in many media, including watercolor,
mixed media, monoprints, enamel
on metal, handmade paper as well as
jewelry.
Jerome and Evelyn Ackerman, 90
and 86 respectively, native Detroiters
of California, have been named 2010
recipients of the Distinguished Alumni
Award by Wayne State University. The
award is presented to alumni who
have a "distinguished accomplishment
in any field of human endeavor" or
who have made "singular contribu-
tions to the development of the cultur-
al or spiritual life of any community"
The Jewish News in April 2006 pub-
lished an article about the Ackermans
titled "Mowtown Modernists."
In a ceremony on
Feb. 21, David Kram
of Chesterfield,
Mo., was awarded
"Mizzou '39" honors
by the University of
Missouri-Columbia.
This is an annual
Kram
award honoring the
39 highest-ranked
seniors from a class of more than
8,000, chosen for their academic
achievement, leadership and service
to the university community. Kram is
the eldest son of Carol (Freeman) and
Rick Grosz of Chesterfield, Mo., grand-
son of Faith and Sandy Freeman of
Novi and Estelle and Morris Kram of
Olivette, Mo. He will graduate summa
cum laude in May from the Robert J.
Trulaske Sr. College of Business at the
University of Missouri, with a degree
in finance.

Point Park University in Pennsylvania
awarded a Rising Star Scholarship for
Theater to junior Maren Fischer of
West Bloomfield at Starmakers 2010,
the annual showcase and fundraiser
for the university's Conservatory of
Performing Arts. The scholarship is
based on academic excellence and
talent. Fischer is a junior majoring in
musical theater and a minor in techni-
cal theater.
Michael H. Traison
of Chicago and
West Bloomfield, a
principal in Miller
Canfield's Chicago
and Detroit law
offices, will serve a
three-year term on
Traison
the board of direc-
tors for the Polish
American Association in Chicago.
In addition, he was elected a vice
president of the board of the America-
Israel Chamber of Commerce Chicago.
Traison is an American Jewish lawyer
who is dedicated to continuing the
dialogue of Polish-Jewish relations.
Israel Education Minister Gideon
Saar announced that the Israel Prize
in Hebrew linguistics, Israel's high-
est honor, was awarded to Professor
Abraham Tal, of Tel Aviv University.
His achievements are in the study of
Samaritan traditions, the language
of Biblical Aramaic (the Targums),
in lexicography of the various dia-
lects of Aramaic, as editor of the
Historical Dictionary of the Hebrew
Language and as an educator. Tal was
born in Romania and immigrated
to Israel in 1950. He earned degrees
at Tel Aviv University and at Hebrew
University in Jerusalem. Samaritan
Aramaic is a dialect similar to the
Jewish and Christian Aramaic used
during the first millennium in the
Holy Land. Aramaic is common in the
Hebrew Bible and Jewish prayers. Tal
is the uncle of Miriam User of West
Bloomfield.
American Associates of Ben-Gurion
University of the Negev (www.aabgu.
org) has received a donation of
$500,000 from former Detroiter Jerry
Cohen to establish the Jerry Cohen
Radiobiology Laboratory at the uni-
versity in Beersheva, Israel. Cohen
is a resident of Walnut Creek, Calif.
He is a graduate of the University of
Michigan.
