T

o honor the dedication and
hard work of 150 regular
volunteers and board mem-
bers, Yad Ezra hosts a volunteer/board
appreciation dinner every year.
This year, the May 5 dinner at Adat
Shalom Synagogue in Farmington
Hills was chaired by Judy Kepes and
Nicole Lester.
Yad Ezra is able to accomplish
its mission of feeding needy Jewish
families in Metro Detroit because of
the dedication and commitment of its
volunteers. Since 2001, a volunteer has
been presented with the Diane and
Emery Klein Volunteer Recognition
Award, established by Yad Ezra's leader-
ship, to honor the Kleins' heartfelt and
unwavering support of the organization.
This year, the award was presented
to Irene Fox of West Bloomfield, a
twice-weekly volunteer who has been
worked at Yad Ezra
since 1992. Her
duties have included
helping pack grocer-
ies for deliveries and
escorting the clients
through the ware-
house to choose their
food.
Elaine Ryke, Yad
Ezra's operations
director, said, "Irene
Fox is as kind and
considerate of her
fellow volunteers as
she is of the clients.
She puts the clients
at ease with her
warm and friendly personality:'
Fox's son, Jeff, said, "Nothing gets
in the way of Mom's dedication to Yad
Ezra — helping at the food pantry
trumps family activities:'
Since the Berkley-based kosher food
pantry opened its doors in 1990, vol-
unteers have provided an invaluable
service as well as a personal touch.
Through the efforts of its volunteers,
Yad Ezra is able to maintain its hands-
on approach, working one-on-one
with clients in the areas of intake
and distribution. Volunteers also help
in the office with clerical tasks, data
entry and the planning and execution
of special projects and fundraising
events for the organization.

Irene Fox

Woods, one of Yad Ezra's founders
and the organization's second presi-
dent, talked about the early days and
the vital role volunteers played. He
spoke about the outpouring of sup-
port of individuals, including Rabbi A.
Irving Schnipper, Jim Macy, Jeannette
Eizelman and Sylvia Abromowitz,
whose passion and efforts to address
this issue were limitless.
The vision and
determination of
many individuals in
Yad Ezra's infancy
provided a strong
foundation for the
food pantry to grow
to serve so many
families in need.
In February, Yad
Ezra celebrated its
20th anniversary.
Since opening its
doors, 12 million
pounds of free
groceries have been
- Jeff Fox
distributed.
The annual award
recognizes the importance of volun-
teers to the organization and pays
tribute to a worthy individual/couple.
Previous awardees include Dorothy
Last (2001), Erwin Robinson (2002),
Phil and the late Ann Dembs (2003),
Dotty Smith (2004), the late Dave
Novak (2005), Helen and Bob Siegel
(2006), Bernie Jonas (2007), the late
Abe Schwartz (2008) and Diane Rimar
(2009).
Yad Ezra currently distributes food
to approximately 1,600 families every
month — more than 850,000 pounds
of food and toiletries annually.
For more information about volun-
teer opportunities or to arrange for a
tour of the warehouse, call Yad Ezra at
(248) 548-3663. ❑
