The event was sponsored by the Jewish Historical Society of Michigan and the Detroit Historical Society as part of a first-time collaboration. Former synagogues included on the tour were B'nai David, Shaarey Zedek, Beth El and B'nai Moshe. Participants entered each building to view the inte- riors, with Jewish symbols beautifully preserved and to hear from a current church member as well as a Jewish spokesperson. "So many of the participants were remembering their simchahs in these buildings, attending classes there as youngsters, and parents and grand- parents who played prominent roles there," said JHSM's Jerry Cook, who served as a bus captain. "The ministers or lay spokesper- sons described how happy they are to worship in these inspiring places',' Cook said. "Bishop Shedrick L. Clark Sr. at the former Shaarey Zedek said he always prays for the peace of Jerusalem, as instructed by Scripture, and thanked those in our Jewish com- munity who helped build such a mag- nificent building, which his congrega- tion bought in 1962." JHSM president Arnold Collens spoke at the old B'nai David; Ruthe Goldstein and Judy Levin Cantor The stained-glass windows at the former Shaarey Zedek synagogue in Detroit spoke at the former Shaarey Zedek; Dennis and Peggy Frank offered words at Temple Beth El's 1922-73 building and showed which aisle they walked down at their wedding; and Cook spoke at the old B'nai Moshe. A highlight of the day was the participation of Cantor Daniel Gross of Adat Shalom Synagogue in Farmington Hills and his wife, Lauren Skuce Gross. In addition to perform- ing, they taught the song "Ma Tovu:' which was sung in each buildings. The inspiration and most of the pre- paratory work was done by Mike Kasky, who has also conducted tours for the Grosse Pointe Jewish community.
