Walk for Project Chessed draws
crowd to help the uninsured.

D

amp weather didn't dampen the enthu-
siasm of the 300 walkers participating
in the Walk for Project Chessed April
25 at Oakland Community College's campus in
Farmington Hills.
Before hitting the trail, participants enjoyed
a pre-walk stretch led by YogaMedics. Then, an
ensemble of musicians from Kid Klez Band of
Michigan led by David Appelman, launched the
walk with jazzy marching music.
Project Chessed, a program of Jewish Family
Service of Metropolitan Detroit, is a referral net-
work of health care providers and institutions
that provides pro-bono care to medically unin-
sured Jewish adults.
Spotted among the walkers was Chessed volun-
teer physician Dr. Scott Lewis, his wife, Karen, and
family members."There's no place I'd rather be
today," he said.
JFS board member Diane Orley and her Fit To
Be Fifty team were a strong presence as were the
walkers on Woll's Warriors.

EHIM, a walk sponsor, sent the largest team
with 27 walkers on the trail. Mindi Fynke, presi-
dent of EHIM, said, "This walk was really a true
testament of the community's support to JFS and
Project Chessed. It truly was amazing how many
people were there for this first-time event. Even
the weather could not stop the event's success."
JFS employees fielded two large teams total-
ing 40 people. What a credit to the organization
when employees not only give a Sunday to sup-
port an event, but also insist on paying the full
registration fee. That reveals much about the
importance of helping our uninsured.
Mark Milgrom, JFS vice president, was
impressed by the number of donations that came
from people who had been helped by Project
Chessed and relatives of those helped to access
health care.
Donations to Project Chessed are continuing
to come in after the Walk. To make a donation,
go to www.walkforchessed.org or call (248)
592-2318.
