T

he sounds of Jerusalem
will fill the air on Sunday,
May 16, when the Zamir
Chorale and Kidz Klez of Michigan
perform a concert together in
celebration of Israel. The free
concert is at 3 p.m. at the Corners,
2075 Walnut Lake Road, West
Bloomfield.
This will be a intergenerational
experience, bringing together the
talents of students ages 12-19 who
will share their love of klezmer
music with the adult chorale mem-
bers.
The Zamir Chorale was founded
in 1944 with a grant from the
Max M. Fisher Jewish Community
Foundation of the Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan Detroit.
Zamir Chorale of Metropolitan
Detroit, an affiliate of the Jewish
Community Center, is devoted to
performing Jewish choral music
and fostering the rich heritage of
traditional and of modern Jewish
compositions. All concerts are
under the direction of Penny M.
Steyer, cantorial soloist at Temple
Shir Shalom in West Bloomfield.
"The chorale's is to share the
music of our people with our com-
munity and to sustain the power of
Jewish song for it is our music that
brings us strength, comfort and
hope,' said Chorale President H.
Arthur Sugarman.
Kidz Klez of Michigan was
founded by the late Cantor Stephen
Dubov in 1996 for students in
grades 6-12. Upon acceptance, stu-
dents undergo training in the style
of klezmer music. The band main-
tains a steady schedule of high-cali-
ber musical performances under
the direction of David Appelman.
Both ensembles continue to grow
and develop and are always looking
for new members. If you are inter-
ested in joining the Chorale, contact
Steyer at (248) 737-8700.
