Jerusalem Day NEW YORK — Yom Yerushalayim (Jerusalem Day), the 28th day of Iyar (this year, May 12), celebrated the liberation of the Old City of Jerusalem in 1967. From 1948 until 1967, Israelis — Jews, Christians and Muslims — were denied access to their holy sites, which were under Jordanian occupation. Synagogues were destroyed. Jewish tombstones were dese- crated and used to build roads and latrines. Today, all holy sites are not only open to all religions, but also properly maintained. People of all faiths flock to Jerusalem. Jerusalem Day is a day of rejoicing, not only for Israelis, but also for Jews across the world. But for Jerusalemites, every day is Jerusalem Day, and especially for those who remember the anguish of gazing yearningly from afar at the ancient walls, of seeing cypress trees that hid even the sight of the Western Wall. The children of Israel, and especially of Jerusalem and its surroundings, dance through the streets and into the Old City on this special day. Terrorist Faces Death MUMBAI (JTA) — An Indian court sen- tenced the surviving gunman in the 2008 Mumbai terror attack to death by hanging. Ajmal Kasab, 23, sobbed into his hand after the sentence was pronounced May 6. Kasab was the only one of 10 Pakistani terrorists taken alive after the series of attacks that left 166 people dead, including six at the Mumbai Chabad house. He was found guilty on May 3 of murder, conspiracy and waging war against India. Meanwhile, the Israeli newspaper Yediot Achronot reported that Moishe Holtzberg, 3, son of tortured and slain Mumbai Chabad emissaries Rabbi Gavriel and Rivka Holtzberg, was being offered a monthly sti- pend and other assistance from the Indian government. Moishe is presently receiving money from the Israeli government as a victim of a terror attack. Peace Talks Progress JERUSALEM (JTA) — The first round of indirect peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians has been completed, the U.S. State Department announced. State Department spokesman Philip Crowley said that the first round of so- called proximity talks mediated by the U.S. was "serious and wide-ranging:' Israel had agreed not to build in the ultra- Orthodox eastern Jerusalem neighborhood of Ramat Shlomo for the next two years and the Palestinian leadership promised to work against incitement, Crowley said. The construction plans in Ramat Shlomo, announced in March during a visit to Israel by Vice President Joe Biden, are in the early stages. Construction likely would not have begun in any case for at least two years. The peace talks began Sunday a day after the Palestine Liberation Organization executive committee approved talks for four months, the first peace talks between the Israelis and Palestinians in 18 months. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu welcomed the RA.'s decision to begin talks. He said the talks were taking place without preconditions, as the Israelis had insisted on during the past year, and that they must "quickly lead to direct talks." "Peace cannot be made from a distance or by remote control, especially given that we and the Palestinians are neighbors," Netanyahu said. The Obama administration reportedly told P.A. President Mahmoud Abbas that it would not present a U.S. peace plan until the two sides begin direct peace talks. U.S. Mideast peace envoy George Mitchell met Sunday with Abbas before returning after a week in which he met twice each with Netanyahu and Abbas. Mitchell plans to return to the region in 10 days. Answering Israel's Critics The Charge Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad last week called Israel a militaristic state imposed on the Middle East by "the West." The Answer Ahmadinejad's remarks continue his regime's anti-Israel propaganda, this time denying the Jewish people's right to a nation-state and the resources to defend itself. — Allan Gale, Jewish Community Relations Council of Metropolitan Detroit °Jewish Renaissance Media • May13,2010
