four questions
Sherry Margolis chats with Platinum.
Although she would never
admit it, longtime Fox 2 News
anchor SHERRY MARGOLIS
could easily be described as
a "super-mom." The mother
of three daughters — Jordan,
20; Alex, 18; and Eden, 14 —
has managed to juggle moth-
erhood and her demanding
broadcasting career for two
decades. Margolis, a resident
of Oakland County, anchors
the station's daily 11 a.m.
and 5:30 p.m. newscasts,
produces special reports and often makes public appearances. Her two
eldest daughters are students at Indiana University; her youngest is a
freshman at West Bloomfield High School. "It's a constant struggle to
maintain balance," Margolis confides. "I thought it would get easier as
my children got older, but it really doesn't. All you can do is try your
best. It does help to have a supportive husband (best-selling author
Jeffrey Zaslow). Our marriage is truly an equal partnership." Margolis, a
native of Buffalo, N.Y., is a graduate of the State University of New York
at Buffalo. She also loves theater and has acted on stage and appeared
in small roles in a handful of films. Here, we ask Sherry Margolis our
version of the Four Questions.
WHAT BOOK, CD OR OTHER MEDIA
DO YOU LONG TO SHARE?
The book I've been recommending is The Middle
Place by Kelly Corrigan, about her experiences
battling breast cancer. The book is a celebration
of family and of that time in life when you're a
wife and mother but still somebody's daughter.
It's funny, poignant and so beautifully written you
won't be able to put it down. My all-time favorite
book is Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, which
I first read as an English major in college. I try to
re-read it each year. And of course, people know
my favorite author is my husband, Jeff Zaslow. I
have to sneak in a plug for his book The Girls from
Ames, which is now out in paperback.
made me feel that if we met, we could become
friends. Faced with many challenges (a daughter
born deaf, an autistic son, a husband's death from
Alzheimer's), she still had the most engaging smile.
She once said, "A happy woman is someone who
has no cares at all. A cheerful woman is someone
who has a lot of cares but learns to laugh in spite
of them."
WHAT IMPORTANT LIFE LESSONS
HAVE YOU RECENTLY LEARNED?
One lesson I've learned is to make sure you cel-
ebrate the happy moments in life. Life goes by so
quickly; your children grow up so quickly. Mark
the happy occasions. It helps you to remember
them.
IF YOU COULD HAVE BRUNCH WITH
ONE BIBLICAL OR HISTORICAL
JEWISH FIGURE, WHO WOULD IT BE?
WHAT WOULD PEOPLE BE SURPRISED
TO KNOW ABOUT YOU?
Opera legend Beverly Sills. I never saw her per-
form on stage, but I grew up watching her appear-
ances on television. She helped popularize opera
with her extraordinary voice; her warm, embracing
personality; and her terrific sense of humor. She
always seemed so gracious and down-to-earth. She
I have a terrible sense of direction. I can get lost
driving in my own neighborhood. Luckily, my
daughter Eden has a very good sense of direction
and a good head on her shoulders. She's only 14,
but she helps me navigate my way through neigh-
borhoods — and occasionally through life.
