faces Helping Hand, Winning Hands Yad Ezra supporters ante up to fight hunger. BY ROBIN SCHWARTZ I PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANGIE BAAN Michigan's only kosher food pantry is celebrating 20 years of helping members of the Jewish community in need. This year, an estimated 800,000 pounds of food, toiletries and other staples will be distributed to thou- sands of local families. In these tough economic times, hunger is a grow- ing problem. "At the end of 2007, we helped about 1,100 families each month," said Yad Ezra's co-executive director/development director Lea Luger. "At the end of 2009, we helped almost 1,400 families each month. It's hard for many people to admit they need help." About 135 people gathered at the organization's Berkley warehouse March 13 for the annual fundraiser "Ante Up For Hunger." The evening included Texas hold 'em, bingo, a silent auction, door prizes, desserts and drinks. "Money raised at the event is being used to help fund our Lunch Assistance Program, which provides free lunches for Jewish day-school students from low- income families," said Luger. "We are grateful to the many individuals, busi- nesses and foundations that support Yad Ezra." Ade VITA RESTORE. RENEW. REVITALIZE.
