July 6 is this year's application deadline, about a month later than previous dead- lines. Winners will be notified by Aug. 6. "The committee felt extending the nomination deadline would give student- athletes an opportunity to include spring sports achievements and awards on their applications;' said communications and events director Hedy Blatt on behalf of the Walled Lake-based foundation. Application forms can be downloaded at the foundation's website, www.michigan- jewishsports.org, and Facebook page, www. facebook.com/michiganjewishsports. Blatt sent 51 letters to athletic directors and guidance counselors at Metro Detroit, Ann Arbor and Lansing area high schools announcing the change. The Athlete of the Year awards are based on athletic achievement. They typically are presented to graduating high school seniors for their career accomplishments. The two Hertz scholarships, for male and female graduating high school seniors, are based on financial need, academic achievement, and athletic par- ticipation. Named for a former foundation board member, the scholarships are used for the recipients' freshman year in college. The Athletes of the Year and scholarship winners will be honored Oct. 25 at the foundation's Michigan Jewish Sports Hall of Fame induction dinner at the Jewish Community Center in West Bloomfield.
