QUESTION & ANSWER
Dept. ... "Wasn't Pegasus
Greek restaurant located in
the Fisher Building before
opening in Greektown? I
remember going there and
enjoying its food:' ... Ernest
Mellman.
[No, Ernest, the Pegasus you
went to opened in the 1980s
and was named Pegasus in
the Fisher in Detroit's New
Center ... Although the food
was also Greek and American,
with moderate prices familiar to longtime
Pegasus Taverna patrons in Greektown, its
atmosphere was totally new and quite dif-
ferent ... If you recall, the interior design
at the Fisher Pegasus had an art deco style
with ornate brass, glass and marble fit-
tings that looked like they might have been
designed into the original Fisher Building
plans by architectural firm Albert Kahn ...
But it was an offshoot of the fine Pegasus
Taverna with its rustic Old World decor
owned by Jim Papas in Greektown, Detroit.

SECOND RESTAURANT with the Grand
Tavern name by George Lukaj is expected
to open in Rochester Hills the first week in
May ... It will be on M-59 and Adams Road,
and joins his three other dining operations,
George's Honey Tree in West Bloomfield,
Village Palace in Orchard Lake Village and
Grand Tavern in Farmington Hills.
REMEMBERING WHEN Dept. ... "I
was 12 years old when my father, Henry
Abrams, and his partner Tommy Zientek,
opened their Star Recreation on Linwood
near Blaine in 1938. On the window was
a gold Star of David with the lettering of
"Recreation" beneath it. The head rabbi
from nearby Blaine shule [synagogue]
told my dad and Tom that the Star of
David couldn't be used on a pool hall
window, so they changed it with the
word Star spelled out" ... Ray Abrams,
Snookers Pool & Pub.
[A remembrance that I have of Star
Recreation, other than playing pool, was
a time when stores were used as "por-
table places" for High Holiday services ...
Someone forgot to remove the awning and
around it were the words, "Come in and
enjoy billiards".]
