he Michigan premiere of a
one-hour documentary film by
filmmaker Terri Sarris on the
life and work of Detroit-area designer
Ruth Adler Schnee, will take place
May 2 at Cranbrook. The screening of
The Radiant Sun: Designer Ruth Adler
Schnee, which will include an introduc-
tion by Sarris and a presentation by
Schnee, will be followed by a reception.
A living legend of modern design,
Ruth Adler Schnee developed her aes-
thetic sensibilities as a young woman
in Germany. Born in Frankfort, she
later lived in Dusseldorf, where her
family experienced the ravages of
Kristallnacht. Her early influences
included family friend and Bauhaus
artist Paul Klee. She and her family
got out of Nazi Germany in early 1939,
immigrating to the United States and
settling in Detroit, where she graduated
from Cass Technical High School.
She further refined her ideas as a
student at the Rhode Island School of
Design before receiving her master of
fine arts in design in 1946 at Cranbrook
Academy of Art, where she worked with
famed architect Eliel Saarinen.
After graduating from Cranbrook
and serving an internship with
American industrial designer
Raymond Loewy in New York, Ruth
Adler married Edward Schnee and with
him formed Adler-Schnee Associates,
an interior design firm in Detroit
that helped to bring the Mid-Century
Modern movement to Michigan. She

collaborated with Buckminster Fuller
on the Ford Rotunda in Detroit (1952-
53) and with Minoru Yamasaki in spec-
ifying finishing materials for the World
Trade Center in New York (1970-77).
Her genius as a textile designer was
recognized early in her career with a
citation of merit from the American
Institute of Decorators in 1947 and
1948; and, much later, her work was
featured in the Montreal Museum of
Decorative Arts' pivotal exhibition
and publication Design 1935-1965:
What Modern Was (1991), as well as in
Cranbrook's centennial exhibition and
catalogue,100 Treasures of Cranbrook
Art Museum (2003-04).
Now in her 80s, Schnee still lives and
works in Michigan, designing woven
textiles for Anzea. She is active in the
Detroit design community as a preserva-
tion advocate for the city's Modernist
history.
The film tells the her story, exploring
her life, her work and the challenges
she faced as a woman architectural
designer who encountered not only
gender bias but anti-Semitism as well.
The film's director/co-producer,
Terri Sarris, is senior lecturer in
the Department of Screen Arts and
Cultures at the University of Michigan;
co-producer Ronit Eisenbach is a
faculty member at the University of
Maryland School of Architecture,
Planning and Preservation and a grad-
uate of Cranbrook Academy of Art with
a master's degree in architecture. ❑

The Radiant Sun: Designer Ruth Adler Schnee will be screened 1 p.m.
Sunday, May 2, at the Cranbrook Institute of Science Auditorium in
Bloomfield Hills. $10 art members; $15 adults and seniors; $6 full-time
