Survivor, Liberator
Meet At The HMC

R

ecently, a heartwarming reunion
took place at the Holocaust
Memorial Center Zekelman Family
Campus in Farmington Hills.
Sandor Adler of Walled Lake was liber-
ated on April 23, 1945 in Bavaria while on
a Holocaust death march with his fellow
Jewish prisoners. His liberators were the 11th
Armored Division of General Patton's 7th
Army. The armored division was on its way to
free the Mauthausen concentration camp when
it literally ran into Adler's group.
In that division was a soldier named Otto
Orwig, who now lives in Rochester.
On March 28, Adler and some of his family
met with Orwig and his family at the HMC
— 65 years after the liberation — and shared
memories and lunch together.
The meeting was coordinated by Adler's

daughter-in-law, Nancy Adler of Farmington
Hills, who contacted the U.S. Army, the HMC
and the U. S. Holocaust Memorial Museum to
locate a local soldier who was in that division
that day. Through her efforts, Orwig was locat-
ed and the get-together was planned.
The two families spent a pleasant time getting
to know each other. The teenage granddaughters
of Adler and Orwig even exchanged e-mails. Who
knows? Maybe there will be another reunion in the
future.
