A

n evening that began with
guests following blue, chalk-
lined Stars of David and ended
with a dinner celebration had a unique
wedding in the middle.
Guests at Akiva Hebrew Day School's
April 20 Yom HaAtzmaut (Israeli
Independence Day) festivities rejoiced
at the marriage of Yisraela (symbolizing
the land of Israel) and Ami (the people of
Israel).

With artwork depicting a bride and
groom, first- and second-grade classmates
walked down the aisle of the Southfield-
based school's sanctuary to begin the
wedding ceremony. In lieu of a ketubah
(Jewish marriage contract), the Israeli
declaration of independence was read. The
program included live music, songs and
readings by Akiva students dressed in blue
and white. It culminated with Israeli danc-
ing, complete with waving flags.
