'Assignment Detroit'
Time's Okrent to speak about project
at Food for Thought Series.
T
he Jewish Federation
of Metropolitan Detroit
Women's Department will
present Time Inc. Contributing Editor
Daniel Okrent as part of its Food for
Thought series at 7:30 p.m. Monday,
May 17, at Congregation Shaarey
Zedek in Southfield. Couvert is $18
per person, including a dessert recep-
tion.
In September
2009, with the
publication of
Okrent's cover story
in Time magazine,
Time Inc. launched
"Assignment Detroit:'
a 15-month proj-
Daniel Okrent
ect dedicated to
what the editors consider one of the
most important stories in the nation.
Through the end of 2010, writers
from Time, Fortune, Money and Sports
Illustrated will continue to examine
every aspect of the city and its region,
both the problems and the potential
solutions.
To further underscore the compa-
ny's commitment to the story, Time
Inc. purchased a house on Parker
Street on Detroit's east side, where
writers live while in Detroit, and
where various events related to the
project are taking place. Visitors to the
"D House" have included Mayor Dave
Bing, Ford CEO Alan Mullaly and per-
former Kid Rock.
Okrent began working on his latest
book, Last Call: The Rise and Fall of
Prohibition, shortly before he conclud-
ed his term as the first public editor of
the New York Times in 2005. The book
will be released in May. Okrent is a
native of Detroit and a graduate of the
University of Michigan.
"Considering the national coverage
of the Time Inc. `Assignment Detroit'
project, we are very fortunate to have
Dan Okrent speak at our spring event:'
said Dr. Julie Goldstein, co-chair
of Women's Department Food for
Thought series. "I am confident that
his insights into the project and its
relationship to the Jewish community
will be interesting to all. This will be
one of his few speaking engagements
in Detroit and I am glad that we can
take advantage of his willingness
to speak given the timeliness of the
Detroit project:'
The Federation and the Detroit
Jewish community face very similar
challenges as the greater Detroit com-
munity — shrinking population,
out-migration or "brain drain" of
young talent, loss of jobs, etc. In fact, it
can be paralleled that Detroit's Jewish
community has experienced its own
rise, fall and struggle to rise again
as was indicated in one of the early
"Assignment Detroit" stories.
The Food for Thought mission is
to provide an educational forum in
which women can learn about issues
of current interest as well as the
Jewish Federation, its partner agencies
and the broader Jewish community.
The program aims to introduce par-
ticipants to the need to support Jewish
life by making a gift to Federation.
Goldstein, Natalie Newman and
Catherine Topf are chairs of the pro-
gram. Linda Spigelman serves as asso-
ciate chair.
The May 17 event is open to the
community. Respond to Debby Sims,
