loomfield Hills Cranbrook
Kingswood pulled off a rare
high school hockey double
this season. On the same day, the
boys and girls teams each won a
state championship.
There were 10 Jewish players on
the teams. Four were on the boys
team that captured the Michigan
High School Athletic Association
Division 3 title and six were on the
girls team that won the Michigan
Metro Girls High School Hockey
League crown.
The Cranbrook boys beat Flint
Powers 3-1 for its state title, the 15th
in the program's history. The girls
now have four.
Alex Loewenstein, Dakota
Sherman, Spencer Tamler and
Jarret Friedland were the Jewish
players on the boys team.
"Each one played a key role for
us during the season and had an
impact on our state tournament
run:' said Coach Patrick Ronayne.
Loewenstein had 22 goals and 19
assists for the year. Sherman was
Cranbrook's top scorer during its six
state tournament games with five
goals and seven assists. Friedland
scored a goal during a 4-1 win over
Calumet in the state semifinals.

Cranbrook finished 22-7-1-1 over-
all, 7-3-1-1 in the tough Michigan
Interscholastic Hockey League.
Sydney Sakwa, the Michigan
Metro Girls League's top goal-scorer,
had both Cranbrook goals in its
thrilling 2-1 double-overtime vic-
tory over previously undefeated and
two-time defending state champion
Grosse Pointe South in the girls state
title game.
Cranbrook lost 4-2 and 3-2 to GP
South during the regular season.
The Cranes finished 19-3, while
South ended up 21-1.
In addition to Sakwa, the other
Jewish players on the Cranbrook
roster were Julia Bleznak, Marlee
Goldstein, Rebecca Glasser,
Leigh Grinberg and Megan
Simmons.
